In the Box with Baron

We mic'd up James Baron, Head Coach of GB Men's Open. JB is also a stellar player but was unfortunately injured for our tour to South Africa so he took the opportunity to do some pitch side coaching and manage the sub box.

Shout out Jade Walker for making her Elite Tag TV camera operating debut and capturing the magic UP CLOSE.

Let us know if you like this type of content :)

3v2 Drill, Under fatigue.😰🏉

Love this drill. Great fun and to test the players ability to attack and defend under fatigue.

Drill:
There are 2 sets of cones. Blue and yellow in this video. Everytime the attack get back they shout a colour, the defence have to reach the cones before they can defend.
This staggers their start position and mixes the Picture up.

Attack have 1 opportunity to score if they do they turn and go again, if they don't they run through and start again.

Usually I do 60seconds on
15seconds to rest and swap over.

Also NO pre planned moves, just play what you see and react to the picture. Move off line, create space, read each others running angles.

Save this and try it out 👊👍

Passing Skill Drill🏉

Can you and your team pass it across the line staying in your lane? Comment and let me know below 👊

.

Great passing drill to emphasise run straight and pass.

To make this drill easier make the pass shorter and slow down your running pace with no pressure on passing timing.

To make it harder increase the pace foot and hand speed and bring in a defender (like adding a cone link the video).

Focus:
Stay straight when passing to reserve space and fix the defender.

Aim:
The coned lanes will highlight if you drift on your pass.

Save it, share it and Tag your team mates to try it out.

Fun Passing Drill🏉

IMPORTANT MESSAGE: This drill is to emphasise running straight, can you comment below and tell me why its important to run straight?👊

Love using this drill post static passing Drills to get moving. I also like to play around with the width & depth for variation.

Drill:
Accelerate forward in a straight line, when you reach the cone pull the ball back to 2nd player (2nd player be patient and hold depth).
Keep your body moving during and after the pass and continue the run forward to the next cone.
2nd player repeat the same pattern.
Start off slow, when you understand the Drill increase pace but always pass the ball before middle cone.

Non negotiables:
- Don't allow the ball to touch your chest!! (What ever the weather)
- Stay straight when running!

Do you work on your skills during a warm up?

Here is a great warm up drill which focuses on the Grubber kick and collecting the ball.

This Is a continuous Drill where player 1 (kicker) grubbers the ball across aiming to land the ball before the cone diagonally opposite and keeping it inside the box.
Player 2 (collector) is looking to attack the ball and pick it up without any mistakes.

After collecting the ball drop it off to the person on the cone and start again the opposite direction.

Aim: perfectly weighted kick from the Grubber and high skill level from the collector.

Save this and try it later. Who's this me? 👊

.

I used this for my Tag Rugby skills session yesterday But it's good for all Rugby.

How awesome is this @veorugby camera 🎥😍.

1v1 Defence Focus.

What are your cues when defending 1v1? Would love to hear and learn from your experience.

.

Today, Tuesday is my coaching day where I share 3 basic tips and 3 drills in a specific skill.

This week its 1v1 defence, and the preparation for the tackle.

My 3 tips are:
- watch the hips (I look at belly button)
- Keep the feet moving, don't sit on the toilet
- Invade their space (Keep moving forward)

.

There are many other cues and coaching points to 1v1 defence but these are todays focus.

Give them a go and if you want the 4th Drill sign up to my Newsletter, with the link in my bio.

Big shout out to the speed man @millicangoldie for taking it easy on me today during the defence drills 😂😂😂.
