📰 💛 2026 Tale Town – Survival of the Friendliest 💛 📰

The publication commissions new works from comics-makers who are asked to engage with the theme of the year’s Festival. One of the recurring compliments PCAF receives each year is about how friendly it is, this is a quality we strive to have but we do at times take it for granted. In actuality friendliness is one of those priceless phenomena that could do with a celebration and acknowledgment of its intangible but important presence.

Our society has long been preoccupied with the myth of the ‘Alpha Wolf’, a dominant, aggressive, masculine figure within social groups that all others submit to. Even the elegant theory of “Survival of the Fittest” is routinely misrepresented as being about a physical, powerful “fitness”, rather than the ability to “fit in.”

But there is another theory, that of “Survival of the Friendliest”. Which is an idea that organisms throughout history have thrived and succeeded not in domination over each other, but through their ability to collaborate, coordinate and find comrades in life.

The theme for this year’s festival is “Survival of the Friendliest” and we are encouraging artists to reflect on the role of “friendliness” in their communities, in their professional practices and in their personal politics.

In the recently-post-pandemic days of 2022, Gabe and Meg hopped over to Boorloo/Perth during the midst of the @perthcomicartsfestival. Despite being knee-deep in festival organisation, we were lucky enough to have photogenic festival co-founders Elizabeth Marruffo (@elizabethmarruffo) and Campbell Whyte (@campbellwhyte) walk us through their journeys from fine art, to finding ways to work and representing the places they love in comics, and cultivating a thriving local creative community. Holy moly they're busy!

Pictured in this post is 'Maggie', the handcrafted main character of Elizabeth's upcoming comic 'Pup Pup is the Boss of the Stars', and a message from @jshsantospirito in Campbell's copy of 'The Long Weekend in Alice Springs'. They are taken from two of 11 stories as part of the Marruffo and Whyte Interview, available to read now on foliocomics.com.

At The Lakes International Comic Art Festival Marketplace with an array of incredible Western Australian comics and a fresh reprint of TALE TOWN’s, our free annual newspaper.

This year’s issue, edited by Elizabeth Marrufo, was themed, ‘Anger is and Energy’ and asked comic makers to create works that explored the anger, fury and frustration that they feel with the world today.

Thanks to Creative Australia for their generous support.

Had such a great time at @PapercutsComicsFestival in Adelaide! ✨

Huge thank you to Owen & Gina @GeorgeRexComics for organising such a cool comics festival and for having me come all the way from Sydney!! So grateful for the support you’ve given all the creators involved. BIG THANK YOU!! 💛

Thank you @CarlySnoswell for hosting our TEXT-TILES panel, sharing stories and experiences alongside @ElizabethMarruffo & Claire Murphy @TunaBake made my heart so happy.

Thanks to everyone who came to the panel, and the market day (and mentioned you saw our panel!) So happy to meet so many inspiring creators and hearing from people who connected with our gentle, textile comic practices.

Big love and thank you to my partner @Willjb_29 for helping me dodododoo. I couldn’t have done this trip without you 💖

Last weekend was the Papercuts Comics Festival in Adelaide, which Liz and I were lucky enough to be guests at.

A fantastic, creator focused event that was full of love and good times, with creators from all over Australia coming together to celebrate the weird and wonderful of comics.

Had a great time chatting on the panel about depictions of Australia in comics with Queenie Chan and Molly Hunt. The market day was also delightful, in the gorgeous Adelaide Town Hall.

Congrats to Gina Chadderton and Owen Heitmann on the wonderful event and only now realize during all the excitement I forgot to get a photo with them!

I did however get a photo with the librarian who was walking around in an amazing Sailor Moon cardigan during my panel session and distracting me the whole time. 😅

We had an amazing time at @papercutscomicsfestival this weekend, from the live readings, to the creator panels, to, of course, market day it's always awesome to have so much passion for comics in one room (or two!).

Thanks Owen (@amplifiedpress) and Gina (@georgerexcomics) for organising such a great event! We were pleasantly surprised to see the cover for Clemency on the Market Day webpage 🫣 and then to have so many artists tell us they'd seen our stuff and really liked it? Wahh 🤩 Also thanks @tia_kearney for being such a lovely tabling partner! Your reading was so cool and I can't wait to read the bits we didn't see.
And thanks to @samuellukeart and your partner for letting me borrow your chair and talk queerness with you! (um, also shoutout to the museum lady for getting us an extra chair after 😂 you're a queen 💅)

Sophie and I are still new to this, but it's been so motivating being a part of such a tight-knit community both in Perth and now across Australia. We're still learning, but we're so grateful to everyone who's helping us figure it out and keeping us motivated 💪😤 You guys are the best 🥰

Thank you to everyone at @papercutscomicsfestival for a great day in a beautiful venue! It was lovely to have the zines and comics received well - 'Anger is an Agapanthus Root' and 'Tired' being the particular favourites.

This is my first trip to Adelaide, and hopefully there will be more to come!

Swipe along to see the Perth crew and follow the tags to see their work and find them at our local events! ✏️

Last slide, the fab section of printmakers I was alongside @tunabake and @mirrandaburton

Have you checked out the new Graphic Novels display at the State Library of WA?

Sitting front and centre as you walk in, you can read explore some of the best comics from across the state in one handy location.

Look how happy these folks are! You too can be this happy!

Additionally delightful are the comics from Milktooth students that are sitting proudly on display alongside all the other works. So cool to see.
