21 years ago, I birthed two baby girls in the space of 30 minutes. Somehow, I knew I was having twins even before the sonographer said “I’m going to tell you something that will change your life forever.” I knew. I called them. I wished for them. I prayed for them. And I was overwhelmed with gratitude for these babies.

At times I felt that maybe I was unworthy of such an amazing gift—these wondrous ibeji, marassa, gemelas, Zwillinge. What a privilege to grow them inside me—to give my body over completely to nourishing them. I sang and talked to them. Danced! We spoke in presses and kicks, swirls and sways.

A couple of weeks after they arrived, I sat nursing them and crying—watching the news cameras hover above another Black mother left to suffer after Katrina—her own baby dying of hunger and dehydration in her arms. And now, as then, I ask—what world is this? Who allows children to be killed? What world will my children inherit? I was determined to raise daughters who would defy the world and its atrocities.

Now, as then, I wonder what world is this? The US aids and enables the murder of children. But it is well practiced in that effort. And now, as then, I heap my hopes onto these youngsters’ beautiful, brilliant heads. Grateful to see them grow—all the while seeing danger and monsters everywhere. There must be a different future.

Sometimes, I still feel unworthy in this mothering, but really what matters is not how I feel about my ability but that I do everything I can to ensure that our freedom dreams come into being.

These young women are wondrous people. Amazing and unique individuals bonded by twinship yet distinct in their varied life paths. My God, I love them. I learn so much from them. So we dance on—as we did then—some days fueling our freedom fight with joy.
