These works document the afterlife of the Bondi memorial flowers — where beauty and decay coexist as vessels of grief and memory.

Working with light and shadow, Ella Dreyfus creates images of quiet intensity, holding the fragile space between loss and remembrance.

Now open, the exhibition brings together 29 artists responding to this moment through painting, sculpture, installation, photography, and digital works.

More than 100 creatives responded to the call-out for this exhibition — a reflection of the depth of feeling across the community. We are deeply grateful to those selected for entrusting us with the responsibility of presenting their work in such a fragile and liminal moment.

This exhibition brings together a selection of those voices, it is free and open to the whole community.

“Holding Light” is an art exhibition currently showing at @bondipavilionofficial. The exhibition brings together a curated selection of 29 Jewish and non-Jewish creatives in response to the Bondi tragedy on December 14th.

I was very grateful to attend the opening last Friday. The works are beautiful - there are photographs of flowers from the memorial being dried for permanent display at @sydneyjewishmuseum, a light installation made of eggshells, and a painting of Matilda Bee by 10-year-old Rocco Rosa. In Rocco’s own words: “Bees are small but very important. They help the world stay alive and work together to protect each other. I think people can be like that too.”

I’d encourage everyone in our community to visit before the exhibition closes on June 28th.

A huge congratulations and thank you to Rabbi Alon Meltzer and the team at @shalomcollective_au for pulling together this exhibition, a reminder of the light in our community.

This exhibition is showing while the Royal Commission into Antisemitism and Social Cohesion is underway. ABOUT ELLA DREYFUS
Ella is an academic, artist and filmmaker with exhibitions held in Australia, Canada, France and Germany. She has a 40-year career as a senior lecturer in photomedia and is Head of Public Programs at the National Art School in Sydney.

Ella won the inaugural Olive Cotton Award for Photographic Portraiture with her portrait The Lads: Nads and Dax and has been a finalist in numerous photography awards, solo and group exhibitions and was represented by Stills Gallery, Sydney’s leading contemporary photography gallery.

Ella’s award-winning documentary Dreyfus Drei, a film about her Jewish family history, identity and artmaking, has had over 60 screenings around the world.

She is currently working on a 21-year-long series of black and white portraits of boys becoming men, which will have its fourth iteration called Under Thirty-Three.

She’s an extraordinary woman. Get your tickets, bring your friends, this will be one helluva night!

In the aftermath of the Bondi Beach terror attack, Shalom Collective asked the artistic community to respond.

They did.

Holding Light is a major exhibition at Bondi Pavilion Art Gallery, presenting 28 works by 29 selected contemporary artists - each created in direct response to the attack that took place during a Chanukah celebration on Bondi Beach.

Selected through an extensive open call-out, the artists in this exhibition represent the breadth of creative voices in our community and beyond. They hold grief, resilience, memory and the enduring will to find light.

Shalom Collective, supported by Waverley Council, is honoured to have curated this exhibition.

“Moral clarity, artistic excellence, and courage without institutional compromise” — that’s Goldstone Gallery. A fearless new art space in Australia to watch.

Thank you to Art Collector for being the first brave publication to say it out loud, and to write and publish it. The essay captures so much about Goldstone, my work, and our community of artists, volunteers and supporters, though I would have added the October 7 exhibition. The story isn’t only in what is said, it is also in what is omitted.

Sometimes it takes one person, or one organisation, to take a stand against hate and shift the course of things. We know the names: Varian Fry, Oskar Schindler, August Landmesser, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Sophie Scholl and the White Rose. Individuals who stood, often alone, when silence was easier. Moral courage rarely begins with a majority. It begins with someone stepping forward.

We are not showing at the Melbourne Art Fair, as it is not currently a safe space for us. The art world still has work to do to truly include a gallery like Goldstone, or an artist like myself, in its programs. This publication has taken a principled step forward, for which I am deeply grateful. I look forward to others following.

Goldstone Gallery presents Australia’s first comprehensive landmark exhibition documenting both the atrocities of October 7, 2023, and the ensuing wave of antisemitism in Australia. This powerful exhibition unites testimony, evidence, and artistic response to create an inclusive, non-political space dedicated to remembrance, truth, and dialogue.

Spread across seven galleries over two levels, the museum-standard presentation features documents, installations, photography, sculpture, performance, writing, and documentary and virtual reality films by 11 leading local and Israeli artists and 16 poets, each contributing to the collective act of bearing witness and commemoration.
