Yesterday, we witnessed something deeply tragic outside Elmcor. A place we have always known as a safe haven for our community.

A young man who was simply waiting outside of our buildings for his mother in a neighboring business was effectively abducted by ICE agents. When several staff members and I stepped outside to assess the situation, we asked basic, critical questions: What has he done? Do you have a warrant? Do you even know who he is?

It was immediately clear they did not. Instead, they profiled him, labeling him a criminal and a gang member simply because he had tattoos, while falsely claiming to possess a warrant they clearly did not have.

When we pressed for answers, exercising our responsibility as community members looking out for one another, agents pushed and shoved me alongside another senior manager. We were not interfering; we were demanding basic accountability, safety, and humane treatment for a member of our community.

In all my years of living and doing this work, I have rarely been so disgusted. Those claiming to uphold law and order proved to be the most lawless people in the street that day. This is happening right in our communities, in places we call home, places we work, places we seek refuge and commune, and it cannot be ignored.

We recognize that speaking publicly carries risks. Fear can make people question whether standing up will bring more attention, more retaliation, or more harm to the very people we are trying to protect. But that fear is also part of what allows these actions to continue unchecked. Someone has to be willing to stand up, name what is happening, and refuse to let our neighbors face it alone. If we remain silent, that silence risks becoming consent for our neighborhood to continue being targeted, attacked, and harassed.

PEOPLE FOR THE PEOPLE means we will not stand by and say nothing. This is a peaceful community and we demand to continue to be able to live in peace. ELMCOR remains a safe space and we stand with our community always.
