We’ve gotten some NEW FOLLOWERS!
Firstly thank you for following and supporting @oakandacornofficial ! Here’s a little information about who we are and how we got here.
.
OAK & ACORN ~ Only for the Rebelles is the first sustainable denim brand in Harlem NY. Founded & Designed by Miko Underwood, the brand pays homage the Enslaved Africans & Black Indigenous Americans contributions to American Denim & American Manufacturing.
.
We say denim & denim making began on the Plantations in the American South. Jeans were relegated to “NEGRO CLOTH” & considered unfit for anyone else to wear. Jeans was the uniform of the enslaved population & our brand pays homage to our ancestors through our silhouettes & story telling.
We ONLY USE Sustainable denim, we have a social impact partner @wegotusnow and seek to empower our greater community with informative educational narratives about the history of denim & denim manufacturing.

A Year ago we officially launched OAK & ACORN ~ Only for the Rebelles with our solo show despite the burgeoning pandemic & racial tension. We felt that the storytelling was evermore important to share. We have a multicultural team of Creators & Leaders we work with that help to realize the vision and messaging of our founder Miko Underwood.
You can learn more about our brand & shop us on our online store oakandacornbrand.com as well as Nordstrom NY, ATL & LA, Nordstrom.com & Shopbop.com!

Radiant BLACK FUTURES month everyone!

I created this collage for #BlackLivesMatter’s curation of a series of posters by Black artists, illustrating the resistance and resilience of Black communities.
A unique piece of art was released each day during the month of February, 2016.

My theme assignment was “Black Women,” and I chose to highlight the faces of Black women of diverse ages, sizes, shades, gender expressions, and abilities who are doing PROFOUND work to create a bright future of Blackness, and who often are not recognized in mainstream psyche, or seen as icons of Black resistance (though some sure have blown up since 2014!!).

The piece is called “Origins of Black Futures” and features the visionary: Mama Asantewaa Harris, Emily Carpenter, Adaku Utah, adrienne maree brown, Patrisse Cullors, Opal Tometi, Alicia Garza, Toshi Reagon, Walidah Imarisha, Wayanna Mabin, Luzviminda Carpenter, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Aurora Sikelianos-Carter, Mama Karen Washington, Naimah Johnson, Leah Penniman, Sharon Bridgforth, El Tsid, and Jasmine Burems.
Look them up! (I tagged as many as I could in the poster)

You can see all the Black Futures posters, and the latest STUNNING video art produced by #M4BL “Black Futures: An Ode to Freedom Summer” -  Links in IG bio.
