“Terms & Conditions: 21st Century Reaper” is my art piece for Out of The Crypt Show this Sunday at 5pm. It’s an Interactive Mixed Media Shadow Box: Cyantotype self-portrait on 9x12 in 300gsm cold-press watercolor paper, silk chrysanthemums, ethically sourced Greater death’s-head hawkmoth specimen, LED candles. Includes CD player and mix CD to listen while you look. Swipe -> to read my artist statement.

We live in a century that asks us to agree to everything
and read nothing: cookies, updates, permissions, terms
of service. We click “accept” dozens of times without
ever really choosing. Mortality works the same way. No one reads the terms before they’re born, and no one negotiates the
conditions of their death. The scroll of technological
and biological updates never stops. I photographed myself as the Reaper, the figure who comes to collect, and made it a cyanotype: an old, slow, sun-dependent process deliberately at odds with the instant technology this piece critiques.
We are preserved in a moment past our peak, the way
this image preserves me. We don’t get to opt out of the
terms and conditions. Only choose how we live with
them.

“Illumination”
18” × 24” Linocut on Unryu Paper

My submission for the @emakitattoo “Out of the Crypt” show this weekend. The show is this Sunday, starting at 5 PM!

•

Taking on a new medium is always a little tricky, especially when your taste exceeds your skill set. The first couple of times I tried linocut, it never really stuck. I wasn’t comfortable with the process, and I think that kept me from exploring it further. (WYM I’m not perfect at trying something new for the first time???)

This time around, I wanted to give it another shot and bump up the size I was working with. Huge thanks to @jadedcarson and Elyssa at the @athenaeummusicandarts for taking time out of their day to give me pointers and help me better understand the printing process. Having that guidance made a big difference in the final outcome.

•

And finally, thanks to @wonka_gallery for helping me get this framed at the last minute! Best framers in town.
