Dir. Emanu Garnheim
Screened as part of my press coverage of Grimmfest 2026

Synopsis: The traveller tries to create new life on a dead planet, inhabited only by the mysterious dust worms. But life only seems to be possible through sacrifice.

What to love
The seamless blending of stop-motion handcrafted miniatures and visual effects draws you into a uniquely intoxicating landscape
There’s not a moment of wasted screentime, with every movement and action of our traveller given purpose and meaning
The dust worms are disturbing yet endearing and as a fan of weird creatures I am obsessed with their design

The verdict
This award winning short doesn’t just show you another world, it paints a barren sci-fi landscape that draws you in with. The attention to detail is phenomenal, from the practical miniature work and stop-motion animation to the application of digital effects. Emanu Garnheim curates an immaculate new world; every movement of our characters is purposeful, carrying a story without depending on dialogue. The balance of light and texture provides beauty and depth to the surroundings; you can see every detail was carefully planned. The creature design feels unique, with dust worms that are disturbing yet endearing in their movement and inquisitive nature. Their presence evokes a sense of mystery and could be viewed as a potential threat to our traveller. Garnheim’s storytelling and pacing is masterful, allowing time for moments to breathe and allow us to become fully immersed. The result is a truly hypnotic, impactful and beautifully haunting animation that will resonate with both horror and sci-fi fans.

As Day 3 draws to a close, we find ourselves truly speechless.

Today’s journey took us through the essential do’s and don’ts of distribution, the art of storyboarding for a perfect start and put our patience to test in a Stop Motion workshop. We learned not to douse stop-motion puppets in coffee in a rat-infested city, we've been blown away by stunning game cinematics and fought against the clock to bring a live sketch to life. Today's been a whirlwind.

To top it all off, we had the honor of screening the entries for our National Short Film Competition, joined by some of the filmmakers themselves. Our hope for the future of Swedish animation has never been stronger!

Thank you to @bonobostudio_zagreb Corentin @annamantzaris @emnetmulugeta @joannaquinn and all the incredibly talented filmmakers!

Thank you all for coming to the festival, we're truly grateful!

Now, it’s time to rest. We have screenings first thing in the morning.
