📝 New blog: Sympathy isn’t a jobs plan

💻 Ahead of Alan Milburn’s forthcoming review on youth unemployment, FFCC’s Director of External Relations Rebecca Renfro calls for bold ideas and creative thinking when it comes to getting young people into work in the age of automation and AI.

🌳 Rather than focusing on how benefits will change for young people, Milburn and the PM need to seriously look at how the work will materialise. The good thing is that there are bold ideas out there – like a national nature service. In Wales, The Nature Service is being developed by FFCC and more than 100 other organisations to build a national gateway into training, volunteering and early careers in nature recovery.

👏 “This is work that needs doing, in every community, that can’t be offshored or automated away, and that young people consistently say they care about. And not only this, we also know that active work, outside, is good for people’s health and wellbeing.”

🌱 What a day at @guardswellfarm Farm!

The Scottish Sustainable Agriculture Conference brought together farmers, crofters, growers and organisations from across Scotland to connect, learn and share ideas for a more sustainable future for farming.

From agroforestry, soils and supply chains to farm finances, succession and grass-based farming, the day was packed with:

💡 Inspiring discussions
🚜 Practical outdoor demos
🧑‍🌾 Honest conversations
🪱 Shared learning

It was fantastic to see so many Scottish Agroecology Partnership members involved, alongside a brilliant community of people working to make positive change across Scottish farming.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us, shared their knowledge and made the day happen, and to Guardswell Farm for hosting us. 💚

Lots of ideas, connections and inspiration to take forward as we work together to support agroecological farming across Scotland. 🌾

Meet The Expert Webinar tomorrow evening! Tues 22nd!

Very exciting! Bit scary! Never done something quite this formal before, so thanks so much for the opportunity to try @emergentgeneration ! There's lots of weird terminology and bizarre aspects to the farming industry, hopefully we can get into some of them, and maybe it will even make sense?

Webinar is free for Em Gen members, which is itself free to join for 18-35 year olds in farming, food, sustainability and related sectors. They do great things like this and in person events. Highly recommend if you're interested in any of these sectors ❤️🌳

Report back tomorrow !🫡

✨ONLINE EVENT✨

We’re excited to collaborate for this Emergent Generation event.

Join Jo and Jas from Basic Income for Farmers for an open, participatory conversation exploring what a Basic Income for all farmers, farmworkers and food producers could mean for the future of farming.

Together, they’ll introduce the BI4F campaign and their definition of Basic Income. We’ll hear from people in the room about what draws them to the idea, and take a guided leap forward to 2036: what might farming, landworking and our communities look like if everyone working on the land had a secure income floor?

Through small-group conversations and shared reflections, we’ll explore what this future could make possible and what needs to change to get there.

The session will include:
An introduction to Basic Income for Farmers
Introductions and small-group conversations

RegenDeep is a new, aspirational and innovative collaboration between those who believe in deep and meaningful system change.

We believe that change should be bioregional and based on local context. Our work will initially focus on the Cotswolds and then ripple across the UK.

We're a knowledge hub and the home of the Regenerative Agriculture Accelerator Programme (RAAP) and annual conference.

We define regenerative agriculture as farming principles and practices that help to:

🐛Improve soil health
🐝Enhance biodiversity
🌨 Rebuild water and nutrient cycles
🌳Reconnect landscapes
👨‍👨‍👦Revitalise families and communities
📈Regenerate rural economies and local food systems.

It's about going beyond sustainability benefiting planetary and human health.

Crucially, the regenerative progress we make today, has to last for generations. For this to happen we need hope, resilient businesses and young farmers willing and able to take regeneration to the next level.

Regen starts at field level. It's good to try things. But we must move to whole farms and landscapes at scale and pace, seeking net regeneration. Time is short.

Regen can be seen as a spectrum, on a scale. Cover cropping and minimal tillage are important first steps for many (regenlight). More diversity of root, crop, stock, habitat, enterprise and people come next alongside reduced synthetic inputs. Feed the soil with biology. Think differently - mindset shift and new knowledge is needed. Integration of livestock and adaptive grazing can then take outcomes to the next level. Now we're talking! Meaningful change comes when we collaborate across landscapes and the food system, and engage with our communities (regendeep).

Regen is often three steps forward and one depletive step back. That's the concept of compounding. No system is perfect. Enjoy the journey. Keep learning.

Deep regenerative practice has lots in common with agroecology and organic farming.

Follow @Regendeep and keep in touch. There's more to come.

Big up to regenerative farming week @rise_regen_

🎗Out now: Our Annual Report 25-26

💥 From a groundbreaking programme of citizen engagement to the publication of the Land Use Framework, after years of advocacy, it’s been an eventful year for FFCC.

🌱 As our Chair Martin Nye says, “The scaffolding of change is now in place… But frameworks alone do not feed a family, restore a river or make a farm resilient – only effective delivery does. The task of the next three years is harder, and matters more… That is where we will put our energy.”

🧩 This year, as we embark on an ambitious new strategy, we are shifting our focus to how to move from policy intentions to real impact on people’s everyday lives.

👀 Read the report and find out more about our strategy and work plan on our website.

📙 New briefing: Farming talks climate

☔ Farming must speed up cutting emissions, while grappling with a rapidly changing climate. But conversations about how to do this can be hard.

🌿 So, what do farmers think about how policy can effectively support agriculture to reduce climate impact and adapt to new extremes?

🗣 Earlier this summer, FFCC ran a series of discussions with farmers across England to inform DEFRA’s forthcoming Food and Farming Decarbonisation Plan.

👉 Swipe to read the key takeaways and read the full briefing via our link in bio.
