There’s something special about a wine that tells a story before you’ve even opened the bottle. 🍷✨

I was lucky enough to attend the launch of Diemersdal’s new Prospect range, and I loved the thinking behind it.

The labels were inspired by a box of old family photographs discovered on the farm - little moments from generations of the Louw family, who have called Diemersdal home since 1885.

But Prospect isn’t simply about looking back.
These are experimental, small-production wines where the team has been given room to explore different sites, varieties and winemaking techniques - using the past as inspiration to create something new.

We tasted three very different wines:
the Prospect Darling Sauvignon Blanc 2025,
the wonderfully unexpected Barbera 2024, and my personal fascination,
the Solderwyn - Sauvignon Blanc made using an approach inspired by Madeira, aged in barrels in the cellar attic where temperatures can reach 45°C. 🤯

And then came an extra special moment… tasting a Diemersdal 1982 from the family cellar.
A wine with a few years on me 😉 and such a privilege to experience.

History, family, experimentation and some seriously interesting wines - this felt like such an authentically Diemersdal way to celebrate where they’ve come from while still looking forward. 🤍🍷

Keep the labels.
Drink the wine.
Remember the story.

I attended the launch of Diemersdal's new Prospect range, which bridges past and future on the Durbanville estate. Simon van der Stel allocated the land in 1698, and the Louw family has been winemaking on the farm since 1885. Thys Louw represents the sixth generation of winemakers continuing this heritage today.

Our launch walk past historic farm buildings with gables from different eras led us through the estate grounds. Our stops along the way included the restored ration store, the jam store built for family apricot jam making, and the cellar attic.

This range celebrates tradition and experimentation in the cellar. The collection consists of three wines: a Sauvignon Blanc, a Barbera, and a Solderwyn. The labels feature archival family photographs.

We tasted the Sauvignon Blanc, which originates from Darling grapes, offering complexity driven by the maritime climate. The Barbera 2024 aged for 12 months in oak barrels, carrying notes of sour cherries, thyme, and eucalyptus. The Solderwyn blends four vintages from 2021 to 2024, aged in the cellar attic where temperatures reach 50 °C. It delivers flavors of honeycomb, dried apricots, and almonds.

Food paired during our experience included bokkoms at the ration store, roosterkoek with apricot jam at the jam store, and a meal in the homestead. Chef Martin de Kock prepared sourdough bread, pickled waterblommetjes, slow-roasted lamb shoulder, paprika chicken, and a honey refrigerator tart served with pear schnapps.

The range is available exclusively at the tasting room at R450 for the Magnums and R350 for the 500 ml Solderwyn.

At @diemersdalwines, a farm with roots stretching back to 1698 and six generations of Louws, the past pops up in a box of old photographs.

There’s a truck full of kids, two friends lying in the spring daisies, a horse outside the old creamery… just everyday farm life, captured years ago. And now those photos are on bottles of wine.

The new Prospect range from Diemersdal has a Sauvignon Blanc, a Barbera and a Solderwyn. And I really like that the story doesn’t stop at the labels: there’s a proper story behind each wine too.

I went to taste some wine and ended up nosing around in the Louw family photo album LOL and how I enjoyed it!😂

I'll share more about the wine soooooon!

Also, how cute is my new bestie in the last frame 🥰 they actually nipped me before running off🤣 typical kitty!

A weekend escape calls for good wine, and these two definitely made the packing list.

🍇 *Diemersdal Pinotage 2025* the more fruit-forward expression, packed with red fruit, spice and those signature richer notes Diemersdal Pinotage is known for.

📖 *The Journal Pinotage 2023* a completely different experience. Bold, complex and beautifully structured, with intense berry fruit, savoury spice and soft, velvety tannins after extended maturation in new French oak.

And there’s something special about opening The Journal right now: the 2024 vintage has just earned Diemersdal a place in the 2026 Absa Top 10 Pinotage, adding another accolade to a Durbanville estate that has been making wine for generations. 🏆

Dryland vines.
Deep roots.
Durbanville terroir.
And Pinotage that shows just how elegant this proudly South African variety can be.

Turns out Pinotage tastes even better with mountain views, a hot tub and nowhere to be. 🍷🌿
