— half a soul review ✂️

rating: 4 stars

Half a Soul was such a cute, refreshing spring read that perfectly fit the season. Another one of those rare instances where a cozy fantasy read was a hit for me. I wasn’t expecting much, so I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed this more than I thought! I absolutely need more books on regency fae.

This novel revolves around Dora, a woman cursed by a faerie and loses half her soul. As a result, she loses any sense of fear or embarrassment, unable to comprehend or grasp the emotional queues that are expected of her within society. Yet in spite of that, it is impossible to hate Dora. I absolutely adored her so much. Even with half a soul, Dora has the biggest heart out there. She’s so sweet and my heart broke for her numerous times. She’s such a unique character yet lovable all the same. Dora having half a soul also means she’s incredibly blunt and I freaking loved the banter she has with Elias. But more importantly, I love how much Dora represents the neurodivergent community.

I was not expecting to love the banter and slow burn between Dora and Elias so much. I was genuinely surprised by how funny it was and the grumpy x sunshine was hilarious! I didn’t expect how standoffish Elias was going to be at first, but I loved the back and forth between him and Dora since most of the time Dora is unfazed by Elias’s derogatory comments and in turn, uses her own snarky banter against him. The romance really grew on me as it went on as well, especially getting to know Elias more and why he’s the way he is. I love when unromantic people do romantic things and I loved even more how the dialogue wasn’t overly sweet or sappy too. It just felt so refreshing and I grew to love both of them individually.

I thought overall this was such a great message of acceptance and how you really don’t need to mold yourself into someone else to be loved. I cannot wait to pick up the other books in this series!

– an arcane study of stars 💫

review: 4.5 stars

Happy Pub Day!

I’ve seen mixed reviews, but I must have been reading a different book to everyone else because I was exactly the right target audience for this. This is my first book by Sydney and this surpassed any expectations I had. I love dark academia, rivals to lovers, deals with the devil, and I ate it all up.

I was never bored and found every chapter thrilling. I was invested in the rhetoric classes and learning about the different Gods that exist. A lot of the philosophical conversations went over my head, but it adds to the immersion that all the students are so smart. I loved how the students can commune with some of the Gods and divine from them. The worldbuilding and magic system was so strong, drawing from real constellations. And I loved the illustrations!

This also had a juicy love triangle that I shamelessly ate up. Both love interests were so hot. Dorian was a guilty pleasure, a devilish stranger she meets and makes a deal with. He’s so toxic, but his allure just kept me coming back for more. I love a good villain.

But the heart of the novel is Claudia and Cassius and I did not expect to love them so MUCH. This was peak rivals to lovers and hate to love. When I hear rivalry, I want the hostility, loathing, and the electrifying banter and Sydney delivered. The enmity emanating from the two of them was so good. It made the rivalry so convincing.

They also establish what a healthy relationship should look like. They get into fights, but I’m so glad they talked through their issues and held each other accountable instead of letting it lead to miscommunication between them. And how devoted they are to each other was so sweet.

The spice surprised me though since I thought this was YA. But I liked the way it addressed healthy boundaries, consent and safety.

I liked the murder mystery, even if I predicted some of it. The final chapters were unpredictable, I was so scared! I wish we got to know the side characters since they were important. I wish this were a series too. The book has so much potential with how detailed the worldbuilding was. If Sydney ever plans a sequel, I would read it!

– this kingdom will not kill me review

rating: 4.75 stars

This is my first isekai and this novel has set the bar HIGH for any future portal fantasies that I read because this was incredible. The first half was already strong, but the second half was where the fun happened, and I had such a great time!

This book revolves around Maggie, an ordinary woman that one day wakes up in one of her favorite fantasy series. Fun? Not when you wake up in a gutter cold and naked with absolutely no powers, and you’re caught in the power struggles of eight noble families and have to find a way to survive.

I really appreciated how the book took itself seriously in how Maggie navigates this new world and what she has to do to survive. The stakes are high and it’s very dark, violent and gory at times. It covers a lot of the logistics of what a real person would experience if they were suddenly sucked into a fantasy series, and it struck a balance of being serious and funny very well.

I have so much love for Maggie. This is a girl that knows how to SURVIVE. In the beginning, she only has her wits to carry her through, but it makes her such a strong FMC. She’s got no magic, powers or martial art skills, only a really smart mind that she uses to slowly build up power and assemble the necessary people to survive. The way she gains these allies and forms a reputation for herself feels so earned.

I love her determination to save the people. She’s also incredibly funny and relatable and you really buy that she used to be an ordinary girl before this.

I loved the found family in this one! It just worked so well because Maggie had to earn their trust and loyalty, and I loved that they had her back in return! The novel really takes the time to make you care about the characters that live in it where you want Maggie to save it.

And the romance! I wasn’t too convinced at first, but WHAT THE FUCK. No spoilers for anyone!

This was so close to being a five star read, but I just had some minor issues with the info dumping. It’s a lot of telling than showing and heavy on exposition. But that was the only issue I had! I absolutely will be reading the sequel when it’s out!
