Showing with NIW @image.museum.ireland @photoireland May 16-9 August 2026

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

All things must pass…. Last few days of the New Irish Works show in @image.museum.ireland - a three-year initiative from @photoireland featuring 10 Irish artists, and a diverse set of image-making practices.

The works cover a range of themes, from the personal to the political, the archive to memory, and at the core: commentary and responses to the process of making photographs and what contemporary Irish photography means, and can be.

At @overjournal we will be publishing responses from writers on all of the artists, with @aoifeherrity’s wonderful text on @ciara_r_photography already available at overjournal.org. We’ll be publishing four more across online and print this year - with additional texts in 2027.

Going to miss having this show on the door step, closes this weekend.

NEW TLP EDITION: the right hand holds the left, Emily O’Connell

The right hand holds the left (2026), an extension of and the I ran’(2023), further develops the visualisation of the artists’ grandmother’s recollection of her time in a mother and baby home, Ireland, 1964.

These state-funded, religiously operated institutions frequently failed to provide adequate care for mothers and babies. Many babies were given up for adoption, like the artist’s dad. At Castlepollard mother and baby home, women were forced to change their names, some assigned house numbers, others saint’s names, erasing personal identity. O’Connell’s grandmother Muriel became “Bernadette”.

For those that are not familiar with the project, TLP Editions is an ongoing collection, produced and designed by PhotoIreland, that presents work by contemporary artists in the form of uncomplicated publications. These are available through The Library Project in-store and online. All and any funds generated by the project go to producing more copies of the publications, ensuring we can keep promoting the artists and practices represented. These editions are regularly showcased and donated to international events and festivals, such as the Icelandic Photography Festival recently. In addition, TLP Editions also grace some important shelves and collections, including that of the Hasselblad Foundation Library and the Martin Parr Foundation.

You can find a list of all the TLP Editions here.

PhotoIreland is kindly supported by the Arts Council of Ireland to develop support projects such as the TLP Editions.

We’re delighted to reveal the shortlisted artists for the 2024 Photo London x Hahnemühle Student Award!

The award has seen phenomenal growth this year, with submissions from over 100 nominated students across 46 UK universities. Having reviewed and discussed in depth these entries, this year’s judging panel has shortlisted five students whose work will be showcased in a group presentation at Photo London (16 – 19 May 2024).

Congratulations are in order to all nominated artists; the judges noted the incredible calibre and breadth of work presented by the students, making this year’s selection no easy feat. The judges will convene at the Fair to select the overall winner, who will be announced at a special award ceremony at Photo London on Saturday 18 May.
