Gagosian is presenting six major new, large-scale paintings by Albert Oehlen in the 2026 edition of Frieze London, which opens on October 14. This video captures one of these works being framed ahead of the fair. In these paintings, the artist continues to explore the still-rich possibilities of a long-established medium and format, riffing on varied fragments, forms, and motifs. Throughout his oeuvre, Oehlen reimagines diverse sources in ways that render “subject matter” less significant than the act of transforming images into new states. Combining graphic brushstrokes and painterly drips with unexpected chromatic and textural juxtapositions, he tests the limits of coherence. In this video, Edmund de Waal (@edmunddewaal) speaks about some of the works featured in his exhibition “if you came this way” at Gagosian, Beverly Hills, last year. The show coincided with a yearlong exhibition, titled “the eight directions of the wind,” of three site-specific installations by de Waal, which is on view through October 26 at The Huntington (@thehuntingtonlibrary) in San Marino, California. In his visual art and literary works, de Waal uses objects as vehicles for human narrative, emotion, and history. His installations of handmade porcelain vessels investigate themes of diaspora, memory, and materiality. Over the moon to announce ‘(Failing to Make) A Documentary About My Sudanese Family’ is having its World Premiere at the @britishfilminstitute London Film Festival! Screening as part of the ‘Altered States’ programme on the 13th and 17th Oct. I filmed this in Dec 2023 during a trip to visit displaced family in Egypt. I thought I was making one thing, but in the end the film folded in on itself and I ended up trying my best to reflect on my own journey as a refugee to the UK, the diaspora, and representation of Sudan, all through some (sometimes a little too silly) humour and honesty. The BIGGEST of thanks to all my crew who jumped on this for nothing. It’s been a long journey, with countless voiceover re-records, arguments with family asking me to take things out, and resisting the urge to just delete the whole thing. It’s genuinely an amazing feeling to have this be appreciated, and it’s an honour to be at BFI #LFF! Heya @olamesmer here with my final post for the week before I hand over to the absolute superstar and a close friend @ndrikaanyika 🥰🔥 To wrap things up here’s a throwback to a very special project - short drama “Maternal”, made with the amazing team of incredible women, including writer @maddensarah director @oliviaowyeung and producer @mslisaleach 🫶 “A new mother refuses to engage with her daughter after giving birth, leaving the midwives to attend to her baby’s needs. But in the night, with no midwives around, she is forced to question what being maternal truly means.” The film looks at one night in the life of a new mother, and explores childbirth as the complex, traumatic, confusing, beautiful and deeply physical and emotional experience that it is for so many women. Simplicity and emotional honesty were our main goal thinking about the visual approach. As a singular prospective story, it keeps us locked in with the protagonist and all the intensity of the situation she is in. We shot the film on one 50mm lens, which I felt helped to ground the look and add a pared back, documentary-like nature to the visuals. Capturing the deeply intense and physical performance of the amazing @carlysophiadavies was an incredible experience, and so was witnessing the very first screen debut of Phoebe Morrison, who was just two weeks old at the time! I’m super lucky to have had the best team onboard to support me through it, including @johnsonsammy @taylorjcam @gabriellescobie natrowbotham @agamazurek @williambrowne @filipe.hardisty and of course my cine buds @ciararigney and @seanmackeydop 🫶 Shoutout to my colourist and frequent collaborator @emmacolours_ for being so intuitive with the grade, finding just the right look for the story! And this is where I leave you folks! Thanks so much for staying with me for my first @illuminatrix_rising_dops takeover! This “Gagosian Quarterly” video presents a unique look at the history of Casa Malaparte in Capri and documents the fabrication of editions of the iconic furniture pieces from the house, designed in the late 1930s by avant-garde writer Curzio Malaparte. Available to watch in full in the link in our bio, the video features interviews with Malaparte’s youngest descendant, Tommaso Rositani Suckert, and Gagosian director Serena Cattaneo Adorno (@serenacattaneo). Chico The Look ya está fuera! Hay un vídeo que grabamos en el barrio de San Andrés (Málaga) donde se criaron mis padres y gran parte de mi familia materna. El proceso ha sido un trip en muchos sentidos y se ha podido hacer gracias a @jul_anka y @almost_ginger que se metieron en el proyecto y elevaron el concepto de esta forma, a @bouzasssss por venirse de Londres casi improvisado y aportar su movimiento y esa fuerza al visual. A mis primas, mi madre y mi abuela que se prestaron a salir en el video y regalarnos ese momento de comunidad casi ritual (se invocaron muchas cosas allí). @ary_maudit y yo echamos horas en el estudio de Strongroom y en su casa para grabar todos los vocals e instru de gran parte del proyecto que irá saliendo. La batería de @joesturges que es una pasada y su groove. Creo que es un buen momento para reivindicar la raíz, honrar antepasadas y revisar herencia tanto cultural como personal.
