My first for @pointemagazineofficial 🩰

Kade Pyle (@futuredancestor) has spent years welcoming dancers who don’t see themselves represented or feel like they belong in traditional ballet spaces. Pyle, founder of @ballez.company, used to post videos of their inclusive open classes on Instagram like beacons calling people to—or back to—the art form.

But in April, Pyle announced that they’d be “turning off the camera” for the foreseeable future. At a time when “the sense of safety has been eroded,” they say, they wanted to keep creating spaces where people could feel safe, take risks, and get better. “In this moment, it has felt like turning off the cameras has been a way for that to happen.”

Pyle’s decision to stop recording is set against the backdrop of a larger debate in the dance world about if, and when, it’s appropriate to film in class, whether initiated by the studio, teacher, or individual students. At its core, the conversation is about privacy, consent, and competing desires: to capture footage for posterity, self-evaluation, self-promotion, and content creation, and to explore, learn, discover, and fail without an audience.

Thanks so much to @futuredancestor @emoryferra @katelynonpointe @leahconte for speaking to me, @lipyanskiy_photo for the class photos, and Amy Brandt for the opportunity and edit!

Kade Pyle (@futuredancestor), founder of the New York City–based @ballez.company, used to post videos of their inclusive open classes on Instagram like beacons calling people to—or back to—the art form. But in April, Pyle announced on Instagram and Substack that they’d be “turning off the camera” for the foreseeable future.

The videos once felt like a source of joy, hope, and inspiration that extended the sense of community in the room. But as recent executive orders began to target LGBTQ+ rights, Pyle noticed a dropoff in attendance.

Class, to Pyle, is “sacred.” At a time when “the sense of safety has been eroded,” they say, they wanted to keep creating spaces where people could feel safe, take risks, and get better. “In this moment, it has felt like turning off the cameras has been a way for that to happen.”

Pyle’s decision to stop recording is set against the backdrop of a larger debate in the dance world about if, and when, it is appropriate to film in class, whether initiated by the studio, teacher, or individual students.

This has been one of the busiest summers for HDC yet 🤩☀️👯‍♀️ Did you know we’re turning 1️⃣0️⃣ soon?! 🥳🥳

Here’s a lil recap of our summer so far 🙃👀

✨ American Contemporary Dances at @webbdeanestevens - we produced the museum’s first ever commissioned dance performance in the historic Webb Barn!! We presented two evening length performances and welcomed 134 audience members!

✨ @hartforddancefest - our biggest event of the year celebrated 5 years this year!! 🥳 Over 25 pre professional and world touring dance companies hit the stage at @bushnell_park - offering a paid performance opportunity for over 100 performing artists and production staff!!

✨ Even with productions happening - our weekly drop in classes haven’t stopped! Since May, we’ve held 61 open drop in classes, with over 570 attendees 👯‍♀️

✨ Our home studio @parkvillesounds stayed full of dance all summer long - providing over 200 hours of rehearsal space for @hartforddancefest performers, and our HDC resident artists in preparation for American Contemporary Dances!!!

✨We’ve also shared our newsletters with a community of over 3,500 subscribers!!

All of this is possible because of this COLLECTIVE of dancers, artists, instructors, volunteers, community partners, donors and audience members that continue to believe that DANCE IS FOR EVERYONE!! 👯‍♀️✨

Thank you for dancing with us. We’re taking a moment to celebrate everything this summer has been… before jumping into what’s next 🥳🤩👯‍♀️✨💖
