A year ago today, I started releasing a string of EPs with covers, outtakes, and remixes orbiting my LP "Postcards From Doomsday." All were released as rapidly as I could make them. It felt liberating to craft and deliver art at such reckless pace; there too was a missing scope and polish lost in the hustle.

"Substacks From Hell" is out now (⛓️ IN BIO). It collects and revisits those songs, and includes some new ones. All 14 are remixed and remastered, some entirely re-recorded, and some expanded by the talents of our good friends:

Wowl (@laurenc.johnson) sings on 7 tracks, including lead vocals (in French!) on Deux's 'Paris/Orly.' Wane (Clayton Curtice) joins with lead guitar and vocals on The Passions' hit 'I'm in Love with a German Film Star.' @ima.void (David Tunnell) brings a banging deathclub remix of 'Work Hard,' originally Depeche Mode. And Velvet Android (@invaderlala & @keithhoustonvo) contribute rousing Moog, piano and vocals for Molly Nilsson’s ‘Meanwhile in Berlin.’

It's such a thrill to work with friends—the beginning of more. It’s also so rewarding to create a capstone to this moment of output. I made music years before I wrote stories, and rediscovered my passion in the height of the pandemic. There is a full-circle feeling now that we collectively prepare to grapple with new challenges.

Like the title, the cover photo of “Stubstacks From Hell” echoes that of “Postcards From Doomsday.” Both feature me standing in front of Christian Schiess’s “Lumen-Illusion” piece in the Exploratorium. The picture used for “Postcards From Doomsday” was taken in 2015, where I stand addled, paper thin and teetering on the edge one of my life’s darkest moments, alone, mouth covered in horror; this picture used for “Substacks From Hell” was taken in 2022, where I stand healthy, sporting a fresh haircut and new tie, arm-in-arm my wife Lauren a week after we got married, both of us looking like we’re only four seconds from the punchline.
