CLX was featured in a recent article “From Awards to Community: The Power of Recognizing Mentorship” as part of the Spring 2026 issue of the National AfterSchool Association digital magazine, AfterSchool Today. The article was authored by CLX’s former Director of Programs, Hillary Cook.
Recognition is one of the most powerful tools we have for building a strong, sustainable out-of-school time field. When young people feel seen and valued, they thrive. When OST professionals feel supported and appreciated, they stay, grow, and lead. Yet recognition is too often reduced to a plaque on a wall or a single day of appreciation.

The Power of Recognition: Building A Stronger OST field explores what it truly means to create environments where both young people and the professionals who serve them feel acknowledged — not just once a year, but every day. This edition also celebrates the 2026 Next Generation of Afterschool Leaders, honoring the emerging voices and visionaries already shaping the future of our field.

One-year ago, the Evanston community allowed us into their homes. And just like the care we promised to take while in these spaces, we made it our priority to do the same with their stories. Thank you ❤️

Working on different documentary sets has taught me this key tip: when filming a talking head interview in a character’s home, the space itself is part of the story. Choosing a location that feels authentic to them—where they’re comfortable and surrounded by pieces of their world—adds subtle layers to the visual narrative and helps them become more comfortable on camera. It’s more than just an interview—it’s a window into who they are and where they come from.

STOLEN SCHOOL confronts the reality that desegregation wasn’t good for everyone.

In 1967, the local school district in Evanston, IL “desegregated” its schools by closing Foster School, the all-Black neighborhood school in the historically Black 5th ward. For nearly 60 years, children who live there have been bussed all across Evanston. Stolen School features the voices and stories of Foster School students, 5th Ward residents, educators, civil servants, and activists who describe their devastating losses and chronicle their ongoing fight to get their school back.

Screening tomorrow @nublockmuseum — RSVP in bio!

Working in Chicago is incredible! I am honored to be a producer that contributed to some of the amazing work @endangeredpeace put into the world in 2023 and seen in this reel. I loved interviewing some of my personal dance and creative hero’s with this team.
Lookout for stories from some of Chicago’s Cultural Treasures, such as @joelhalldc @redclaydance @teatrovista and @_threewalls_ !!! Our team moved gracefully throughout the entire city and was continuously praised for our work and for reflecting the type of inclusivity and excellence behind the scenes that is limited on most sets (even in 2024).
Thank you @raphaelnash and thank you to the team… I look forward to “rolling” with you all again this year 🎥
