Hace poco vivimos un encuentro muy sentido en Casa Sotavento junto a Emily, Nya y Endi, estudiantes de antropología, estudios latinoamericanos y estudios africanos. Nos sorprendimos con las similidades que conectan ala cocina afrocaribeña con la afropacífica. Mientras cocinábamos, emergieron las memorias de sus madres haitianas, jamaiquinas y colombianas, recordándonos que la cocina es mucho más que alimento: es cuidado. The last two Photo Talks have been something special. In June, Sound & Stage brought together @harveybizarre, @ericwdanielss, and @yellowwindbreaker to talk all things live music photography — capturing energy, chasing light, and trusting your gut in the middle of the crowd. And back in April, Reflections featured @p0lar0idprinc3ss, @morganneboulden, and @endiyaah of @blackimagecenter for a conversation on photography as a mirror — of self, memory, and collective story. A slower, more tender talk on holding space through image and archive. An immense thank you to everyone who joined us in these rooms, and to @mirasfilmlab for the opportunties of collaboration.

We’re excited to announce the next installment of our Photo Talks series with @mirasfilmlab ! Join us for Photo Talks: Reflections, a panel discussion featuring photographers @p0lar0idprinc3ss, @morganneboulden, and archivist @endiyaah, of the Black Family Archive at @blackimagecenter. Together, we’ll explore how photography can become a mirror—revealing personal and conceptual layers through both image-making and curation. This conversation will dive into how each artist engages with the theme of reflection, whether literal or emotional, and how it shapes their creative choices. We’ll discuss photography as a space for self-exploration, collective memory, and intentional storytelling — along with techniques for drawing audiences into moments of pause and introspection. Endiya will be joining us virtually via Zoom, adding an important archival perspective to the conversation. Following the presentations, we’ll open the floor for Q&A and time to connect with fellow creatives. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Doors open at 11:00 AM, with presentations beginning at 11:30 AM on Sunday, April 6th. Admission is free and by RSVP only. Capacity is limited—click the link in our bio to reserve your spot! The Black Family Archive invites you to reconnect with your visual legacy by exploring the stories and experiences captured in your family images. We’ll be offering: 1. Archiving sessions aimed to provide support and resources to help salvage, preserve, and protect these irreplaceable memories, ensuring that they are not lost to time or disaster. 2. Conservation sessions for smoke-damaged or dirty photographs and materials to learn how to properly salvage, clean, and preserve your important keepsakes. Please note: These sessions are specifically for individuals whose homes have been affected by the Los Angeles fires. In the spirit of ancestral veneration and the tradition of poetry as archival practice we present “Poetic Photo Portals” a contemporary archiving activation care of ITS-IN-SCOPE & GODS/GHETTO/GUIDE. This workshop uplifts family photos digitized at Black Family Archives with the poetics and prayer practice of @godsghettoguide. Facilitated by ITS-IN-SCOPE founding archive caretaker, Marvin James, this experience offers guests a moment to move through grief and gratitude by collaging poetics and prayers onto a photograph of their beloved. From 4 PM - 6 PM, playback your home videos with TAPE LA, learn how to conserve and archive your family photos, make re-prints, and re-imagine your lineage through art activities by @itsinscope. Then stick around from 6 PM - 8 PM, to engage your family history through communal storytelling co-facilitated by @PerennialMemoryLab, enjoy vegan soul food bites catered by Regeneration Kitchen, and a home video screening alongside a live jazz ensemble! Year Two Recap of Maintain The Mystery & Audubon Middle Partnership. Another successful semester introducing our South Central Is Mecca Curriculum alongside our Textbooks and Coloring Book to our new eighth grade class at Audubon. Students say this the best class they ever had! Our curriculum help discover unique skills via architecture class where students designed their own floor plans, or public perception and critical thinking where they showcase emotional intelligence and having a homegrown textbook that even highlight some of the student families, given them immediate pride and willingness to learn more. Students were quoted asking their teacher more questions about Sundown Town, Charlotta Bass and Ruth Temple after our classes. Thanks to our amazing educational department constantly growing, we had some of the best in the field help execute the program further. We’ll be back for year three to expand the program to greater heights and maximize student potential! #BSAPLausd #SouthCentralIsMecca
