The literary ‘canon’ I wish I’d been taught. A list of fiction books that taught me things i didn’t learn in school (or at least not in quite the same way).

These are books i read outside the uni that have stayed with me and almost all of them have a permanent place on my all-time favorites shelf (my personal literary Hall of Fame!).

My MA and PhD did introduce me to plenty of texts beyond the eurocentric masculinist canon, so this isn’t a critique of everything I was taught. More a reminder that education can happen too outside the academia.

I’ve organised these books around 4 themes: reading against national memory, when women write back, censorship and intellectual freedom, and exile, belonging and finding home. I’ve also included mini-reviews of some of these titles.

If you could add 1 book to the university curriculum, which would it be?
