HEAT STRIKES WORK

Striking bus drivers in North London have forced Transport for London to act on hot cabs across the city in a victory for Heat Strike.

We are winning. The striking drivers are an inspiration. Now the campaign continues as V&A workers strike and over 180k have signed petitions for a max working temp.

The victory comes after three years of unions passing motions supporting the Heat Strike campaign, and campaigners spreading the word about why we need to put measures in place to protect workers from the climate crisis and demand a maximum working temperature for the UK.

The 1,500 drivers who took industrial action last month over hot weather working conditions called off further disruption after they voted to accept a new deal following negotiations between Unite and Arriva.

Now @transportforlondon and @sadiq @mayorofldn have confirmed they won’t just fit air conditioning to Arriva buses in North London, but committed to fitting all London bus driver cabs with air conditioning by May 2027.

We’ll be joined by Equity Councillor and Green New Deal Equity’s Green New Deal Network member @marla_k.d to discuss how performers can help build a greener industry. We’ll explore campaigns for sustainable workplaces, making our union more environmentally responsible, and standing in solidarity with workers fighting for a just transition.

We’ll also be having a discussion about pencilling and members’ experiences of being held for potential work during the casting process. We want to hear from members about where pencilling happens, how often it leads to work, how long people are kept under a pencil, and whether being pencilled has ever meant turning down other work. Your experiences will help inform Equity’s developing work around contractual rights in casting and campaigning for pencilling to end.

Today bus drivers ballot to strike over heat at work, over 175,000 people have signed petitions calling maximum workplace temperatures, and some parts of the country could face temperatures well over 30 degrees.

So when will the Prime Minister protect workers from extreme heatwaves?

As the summer of heat continues, wild fires rage, and temperatures over 30 degrees are predicted again in some parts of the country. Multiple unions are voting on whether to strike for better working conditions in heat waves today. Bus drivers in North London are threatening to strike unless air conditioning is installed in cabs where some have recorded temperatures of 50 degrees. Meanwhile museum staff at the V&A in London are also balloting to carry water at work and to close areas of the museum when they go above safe working temperatures. The bus driver ballot closes today Wednesday the 29th July.

The increased attention on the issue of workplace safety comes after over 1000 people including teachers, bus drivers and bakers took part in the first ever national Heat Strike during the unprecedented deadly heatwave in June. Now over 175,000 people having now signed petitions demanding the Government take urgent action to set a maximum workplace temperature and protect workers in the face of more dangerous heatwaves.

Temperature by Sean Paul can move over, it’s time for Alicia Keys to top our Hot Strike Summer playlist.

This girl is on fire! As this relentless heat continues Natural England map of fire risk severity is now at the highest level.

Already this year over 60 wildfires have burnt more than 17,000 hectares. Damaging nature and causing communities to have to close windows to avoid smoke and in some cases even evacuate their homes.

Firefighters in North Wales announced a major incident this week near Conwy Mountain and worked tirelessly overnight.

Firefighters see first hand the impacts of the climate emergency which is why we are so proud that the Fire Brigades Union have supported the Heat Strike campaign and our demands to improve protections for workers and see the Government enact a climate action plan.

This summer as people feel the heat, it’s up to us to keep them safe. The Red Cross say the biggest threat from heat in the UK is avoidable, it’s the perception gap. In the UK we are just not used to or built for this weather, and that lack of understanding causes accidents. Sharing our simple safety advice helps.

London Climate Action Week ran through June, and it kept us busy all week 🌍 Here’s where you would’ve found us:

IT’S NOT COOL

This week’s heatwave is an opportunity to prepare for the next time extreme heat hits.

Did you know when you sign up to join the next Heat Strike you get access to resources about how to stay safe at work in heatwaves, and help unions win their campaign for climate action that protects all of us?!

Use the free heat health and safety poster to start the conversations at work about changes you can make such as avoiding travelling in peak heat, taking extra breaks in the shade, and setting a maximum working temperature.

You could even set up a cool station in your community to hand out advice and encourage more people to sign up to say they will join the next Heat Strike.

IT WAS 35.9°C ON THIS DAY IN 1976

Some politicians and pundits would have you believe that 50 years ago was both the worst heatwave ever and that everyone just kept calm and carried on.

The truth is in 1976 workers went on strike, schools closed, transport was disrupted, and the government passed an emergency law to ration water.

July 3rd 1976 is not even in the top 10 hottest days, 9 of which have happened since 1990 thanks to man made climate crisis (last week came in 6th hottest).

The 1976 heatwave is well remembered due to how long many parts of the UK went without rain with 15 consecutive days over 32. Rivers ran dry, water was rationed and even some schools closed!

Many workers went on strike during the summer of 1976 including the famous Grunwick Strike, Rover car painters, staff at Heathrow Airport, and even the barmen in the House of Commons who went on strike and won their demand after being told they still had to wear their green jackets in the heat. Some workplaces sensibly changed shifts so workers could work from 6am until mid afternoon rather than starting at 8am as usual.

Last week we heard stories of ambulances called to schools, workplaces shooting well over 40 degrees, thousands of heat related deaths across Europe, people sacked for asking for changes in their workplace, unions supporting bus drivers to remove themselves from overheating cabs, and millions heard the call for a maximum workplace temperature.

In June people across the UK could feel that our workplaces and communities are not prepared, and now with more heatwaves like this one are on the way they are scared.

But as union members and climate activists we know there’s power in a union, change doesn’t happen without protest, we’re cooler together!

STRIKE WHILE IT’S HOT

You have taken your workplace temperature and handed out water in hot town centres. You have shared health and safety advice and held up Heat Strike signs on your break. From Brighton Pier to bakeries in Hull we’ve sent a clear message: Heat Strike Now!

Today the Heat Strike continues across the country.

Our unlikely coalition of bakers, teachers, firefighters, climate activists, doctors, disability rights campaigners, landscape gardeners and grandmothers are calling for better protections for workers in heatwaves.

The Government is feeling the heat!

After many places remained over record breaking temperatures overnight and June records could be smashed again today it looks like ministers are now considering setting a maximum working temperature with back benchers putting forward an Early Day Motion.
