The Best Weapon for Peace feels like it’s speaking directly into this moment we’re living through.

Maria Montessori’s insistence that peace is built slowly through children, through dignity, through education that honors humanity, lands differently now. Not as a soft idea, but as a radical one. In times of violence, polarization, and fear, her clarity reminds us that the work with children is never neutral. it’s deeply political, deeply moral.

I also love how Erica Moretti centers Maria Montessori not just as a pedagogue, but as a children’s rights advocate and peace thinker. It mirrors so much of recent work that I am already holding, education as protection, education as resistance, education as hope.

This is a book to keep close and return to often.

As we approach the end of the 2024-25 academic year, we would like to reminisce on our signature and new programs from this semester.

On March 25th, the Coccia Institute in collaboration with @inserrachair presented a conversation with Maria Laurino, author of 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑪𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒅𝒓𝒆𝒏. Introduced by dott.ssa Teresa Fiore (@inserrachair) and featuring guest dott.ssa Erica Moretti (Fashion Institute of Technology), this event uncovered the stories of Italian children sent to America by the Vatican for adoption into Catholic families.

Thank you to @americanmontessori for bringing Erica Moretti to The Montessori Event! Her talk was my favorite maybe ever! If you haven’t read The Best Weapon for Peace yet, it’s absolutely fantastic and I highly recommend it.
What Moretti does in The Best Weapon is unlike anything published up to this point and shes take an historian’s lens to the life of Montessori, situating Montessori’s work within a broader historical context. All that is to say, it will surprise and enlighten you!
