One thing that many people outside of the herp sphere don’t realize is just how unique Australia is for its specific ratio of venomous to nonvenomous animals. Unlike in the states Australia vastly favors venomous over nonvenomous species, one of the biggest factors of which being the harshness of the environments across the continent. Housing some of the hottest, driest habitats on the planet, Australia is no place for any animal that can’t hold its own and reliably find food. This is a large factor in the continent’s bias towards venomous animals. Since food can be so scarce, these reptiles need a way to kill their food quickly and reliably so the first stop on the evolutionary journey is right up venom creek. This applies not only to the elapids there (a group widely known for its venomous capabilities) but to some of the colubrids as well such as this brown tree snake. These are a lizard eating tree dwelling species in the boiga genus widely distributed across the northern and eastern coasts of the continent. These are a rear fanged venomous colubrid that while not dangerous to humans, is often confused with the much more potent eastern brown snake. These were one of the species that escaped us on our first trip, but we were very satisfied to find well over a dozen on our second! This individual was found right in our base camp in the brigalow by Liam and I could not be more satisfied with how it turned out.

The strangest of the antaresia species that we saw during our stay in the brigalow. Unlike the pure spotted python from my last post, this individual snake is most likely an intergrade spotted and children’s python as their ranges overlap in the area we were in.

Continuing the trend of my favorite shots being of pythons, here we have the first of many coastal carpet pythons from the trip. During our stay in the brigalow these were surprisingly few and far between. But as the latter half of the trip ensued along the coast these became easily the most common snake we would see during our stay. On our last stay in Australia we went to a part of the central coast of New South Wales in a region where diamond pythons intergrade with coastal carpets like these ones. Those from last year typically had much higher concentrations of color and contrast between the light and dark scale patterns. They were obscenely beautiful and I can say without question that seeing the pure carpets in Queensland this time was just as magical!

After the amazing first day we had the pressure to find our next big target was on. We were determined not to waste a single second of this trip as Paul would be leaving us halfway through the trip to go back to the states. So come sun up we hit the asphalt and made our way north to our next spot in the brigalow to search for the increasingly rare woma python. These are a species of cryptic, reptile eating python native to the more arid regions of Australia and I actually own a captive bred one at home so I was incredibly curious to see how the might compare to those in the wild. After several hours of cruising and hiking through the bush night began to fall and with it reptile movement began as well. Several smaller species that we had wanted to see, such as Australian coral snakes, made themselves known but so far our biggest target had evaded us. The night dragged on and with the passing of time the movement slowed. We told ourselves one last pass and made our way back down the road. This was the best decision that we could have made as when we did we saw the other car for our group slam on the brakes ahead of us and pull over for the Mac daddy of all brigalow pythons. As we pulled up Jamie said to me “you won’t believe the size of this carpet” so I went in thinking that it would just be a standard carpet python, before realizing that he was playing a joke and that the snake that we saw them pull over for was a six and a half foot long absolutely beautiful woma python! Our excitement filled the air as we all gathered round and celebrated crossing off both of our top two biggest targets in less than 48 hours of being there. But the outback wasn’t even close to through with us yet.
