Thrift stores are REALLY out of control with the prices these days. HOWEVER, you can still find high quality kitchen items for cheap.

It varies a lot from location to location, but keep an eye out. You never know what you'll find.

Prompted by someone’s comment about my bedroom windowsill, I have started testing my apartment for lead. I told the landlord over a week ago and asked them to test, but they didn’t so I’m doing it myself. We’ll see if they do anything.

@ericeverythinglead is where I got this kit. He’s fantastic, and if you’re worried about lead in your home, I would highly recommend you check out his content and the Flouro-Spec he makes.

Lead was something I became interested in after becoming pregnant. I wanted to keep Henry safe from lead painted wooden toys. The interest deepened when we bought 125 year-old farmhouse. We needed an easy way to test the different layers of paint around the house. After some research, I bought a lead test kit (Fluoro-Spec)that has been really informative, and quite surprising! Take a look as I test a few of my mugs!

@ericeverythinglead test kit is here and first suspect is slightly positive. She would play with this while I cooked dinner a lot of nights. Follow along for more testing! Any suggestions on what else to test?

This is not an ad. This is a product I found on Instagram that lets you do low-cost, instant lead tests in your home.
Our home was built after lead was banned in most consumer goods, so I wasn’t worried about exposure through old paint, but my youngest and I like to thrift and go antiquing. Most of what I bring home is just for display, so I’m not in regular contact with it, but I wanted to test to see what we need to be cautious of.
I was more than a little surprised by where I found lead.
I expected it in my truly antique pieces, but only a few actually had any.
I was VERY surprised to see it in the souvenir tile from Barcelona that is made for tourists that I bought only about 15 years ago.
And I did not expect to see it in a piece from a Paint-your-own pottery business.
The teddy bear plate from the late 80s was meant for children to eat from and the most alluring part of the plate was painted with lead.

Now that I’ve finally broken into the kit (I ordered it a good 6 months ago), I’ll be taking it with me when we thrift.

The Gaudi tile will become a wall hanging and stop serving as a coaster.

And likely the next time we move, I’ll dispose of all of these (except the giraffe) safely.

The company is @ericeverythinglead if you want your own kit.

Again, not an ad. Just a happy (if shocked) customer.

We would do anything to protect our children.
But what happens when the danger isn’t obvious, visible, or talked about at all?

In this episode, I pull back the curtain on lead exposure…where it actually hides, why it’s still showing up in modern homes, and how my journey with my autistic son pushed me to start asking difficult questions. And @ericeverythinglead was the perfect person to have this conversation with. 🔥

You’ll hear:
• how curiosity (not fear) became my compass
• how Eric Ritter went from drug testing to at-home lead detection
• where lead can still lurk-in water, homes, and everyday items
• simple, practical ways to reduce risk without panicking
• why parents asking “inconvenient” questions is how real change happens

This is an honest, grounded conversation, filled with stories, truth, a little humor, and action you can *actually* take.

Lead exposure is possibly killing you faster and you don’t even know it.

On our newest YouTube episode, DSG Founder @mike_oscar_delta is joined by lead researcher @ericeverythinglead to discuss how and why lead exposure affects the shooting and tactical community.

If you’re shooting or handling ammo frequently, you’re going to want to watch this one.
