Isn’t it *funny* how I make more money per year as a photographer than I do as a full-time teacher? I’m surprised by it too. Let’s be honest though, I didn’t go into teaching expecting to make bank.

I went into education, and I stay in education, because to me there are few things more joyful than working in a school - laughing alongside kids, helping them master a new concept, building safe relationships with students who feel alone - it’s all magic to me. So many people ask me if I want to quit teaching and do photography full time, and most of the time the answer is no. I love this career. But there are times when leaving the profession feels like it would be the smarter choice. I have been hit, kicked, sworn at, and have had multiple items thrown at me (a Ukrainian Easter egg being the most interesting item, and a chair the most destructive). These experiences happen in education far more than I think most people are aware of.

Last year I went on a medical (read: STRESS) leave from what I truly believe was my dream job. I was physically ill from the daily panic of wondering what I’d be dealing with that day. I was burnt out, exhausted, and overwhelmed. This situation was primarily caused by a lack of resources in our schools. I truly believe that every teacher, every school, and every division is doing the best that they can with what little they are given to work with, but the kids that need the most support are the ones suffering the most. Kids in Saskatchewan deserve so much better than our current education system.

Please join me in writing letters to the MLAs of Saskatchewan. Let’s make some noise for education! Enough is enough.
