The gift of a lifetime has been loving Kona.

When I was just 21, this sweet face and those piercing eyes popped up on the local animal shelter site in Burlington, and something just told me we needed each other. After literally running away up Pearl Street on only night 2, this fearful, defiant and untrusting dog started to let me in. Day by day, mile by mile as she helped me train for @bostonmarathon, Kona and I fell into lock step with each other. We spent hours in the car going to our mountain home in Waterville, where she got her namesake. She was the @uvmcrew spirit captain and she was the life of our senior year. Kona brought me out of so much darkness and taught me what unconditional love, patience, and soaking in the fresh air really meant. She licked away tears and shared an ice cream at any chance. Kona helped me land our favorite person and her emotion support human, @nakowalczk and never stopped reminding me I was the spare human. She was our constant through grad school, was my protector on evening runs, and the perfect bed hog of the countless beds we shared. We covered hundreds of thousands of miles together, endured a cross country move to the place where Kona has always belonged, Alaska, and the place I will always feel her most. We’ve climbed some of the most beautiful peaks, she has pulled me out of the valleys of grief, and given us the gift of her for over 10 years. We are so grateful for the spunky, relentlessly loyal(albeit to Nathan) love bug that her little fiery spirit is. Getting to be in her existence is an honor we will endure a lifetime of missing her for. Our #nospleenqueen, our rescue who really rescued me, my soul dog, and the girl who taught me just how special a dogs’ love is, thank you will never be enough.

We take so much solace and have so much gratitude in knowing the people who loved her gave this rescue dog the very best life she never dreamt up. From every bodyslam and howl, to the little tail taps and her sweet way she could never get close enough. She loved her people just as hard as she loved life. Thank you to everyone who loved our girl.

I love you, Kona. Our best girl, our furever girl. Go give your grandpawre
