Reshaping the soundscape: from contemporary classical to jazz and beyond. 🎶✨

For our final week of Black History Month UK, we are looking forward—celebrating the contemporary Black composers, performers, and innovators who are actively redefining what classical and modern music sounds like today.

Slide through to explore four artists making waves across the global music industry:

✨ Errollyn Wallen CBE – Renowned composer and current Master of the King’s Music, making history as the first Black woman appointed to the prestigious royal role.

✨ The Kanneh-Mason Family – Seven extraordinary siblings whose sheer virtuosity and passion for performance continue to inspire a whole new generation of young classical musicians worldwide.

✨ Cassie Kinoshi – Mercury Prize-nominated composer, saxophonist, and bandleader whose work seamlessly bridges contemporary orchestral music, jazz, and visual media.

✨ Julian Joseph OBE – Acclaimed jazz pianist, composer, and educator who has been at the forefront of championing British jazz and music education for decades.

From royal appointments to groundbreaking jazz-orchestral fusions, these trailblazers remind us that music is a living, evolving art form shaped by bold creators.

We came together to celebrate women who are doing extraordinary things. There was such energy in the room, and such warmth. I was privileged to host a table of fabulous women Huge congratulations to all the incredible award winners. Everyone in the room gasped when it was announced that the magnificent #GisèlePelico was the recipient of our final award for the Woman Of Courage. Her speech was wonderful and she is what @womenofyear is all about. An ordinary woman who has turned her own pain and horror into something so positive and important. #ShameHasChangedSides 💖💖💖

First is Complications in Sue written by Librettist Michael R. Jackson. Complications in Sue pieces together one woman’s existence across ten decades, each scored by a different composer. Composers include: Andy Akiho, Alistair Coleman, Nathalie Joachim, Missy Mazzoli, Nico Muhly, Rene Orth, Cécile McLorin Salvant, Kamala Sankaram, Dan Schlosberg, & Errollyn Wallen.

Second is The Suite from Loving v Virginia by composer Damien Geter. Loving v Virginia tells the harrowing story of Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple who married in 1958. Loving v. Virginia version preserves the opera’s central musical themes and dramatic arc- opening with the home theme and following many winding paths and challenges until Richard and Mildred finally return home in the end.

Third is The Central Park Five by Anthony Davis and Richard Wesley. This Pulitzer Prize winning opera tells the story of five Black and Latino teenagers who were wrongly convicted in the 1989 rape and assault of a woman jogger in Central Park. In addition to streaming, Long Beach Opera is having a listening party on Monday, October 12th. Doors open at 7pm. Hear selections from the newly released recording and join the composer, librettist, and special guests for a conversation about the work, the story behind it, and the power of music to confront injustice.

Happy Streaming!

What an honour to be at @oxfordsong on the opening night of their 25th Festival. I remember @sholto.kynoch putting a flyer up at @royalacademyofmusic when we were students. The programme is INSANE! One of the world’s great festivals. A joy to be in the new @schwarzmancentre with Dame @sarahpconnolly in a programme we love: Mendelssohn, Brahms, Debussy (next to be performed at @wigmore_hall later this month), Liszt and the stunning cycle written for us by @errollyn9552. Get along to more Oxford Song events! Last photo…. Obligatory post concert, service station fare….

'Every piece of music I write, I want to impress myself.'

Did you hear Errollyn Wallen CBE @errollyn9552's new piece, FLARE, at our 80th Anniversary celebration at the Royal Albert Hall last month? The composer reflects on being commissioned to create a roof-raising fanfare to mark a milestone in the Orchestra's history.

Today @exetercathedral, a new introit by Errollyn Wallen CBE, Master of the King’s Music, is to be performed for the first time during Evensong at our National Gathering.

The commission based on Psalm 96,  'O sing to the lord a new song', is through a partnership between Cathedral Music Trust and supporter Tom Hoffman, whose charitable trust has established an endowment to fund a new anthem every two to three years, in perpetuity, for cathedral, church and chapel choirs.

The aim is to bring new music by contemporary composers into the living repertoire of choral music. Errollyn Wallen's introit is the first commission through this endowment, written for the Choir of Exeter Cathedral. Its first performance also falls during Cathedral Music Trust's 70th anniversary year, making this a particularly special moment for us to support new music.

We are greatly looking forward to hearing this new work for the first time today in Exeter 🎉
