🌬️My People, My Air — because clean air is a right, not a privilege.

For the past many years, CFROG and our partners at CSUCI, Patagonia, Clinicas del Camino Real, and the Ventura County Air Pollution Control District have remained dedicated to providing increased access to air quality data in communities disproportionately impacted by fossil fuel extraction and combustion. This video takes a deep dive into CFROG’s air quality monitoring efforts - watch now to learn more about our work and how to get involved! Link to video in bio.

Many thanks to @mel400lux, one of our EVA youth, who filmed, edited, and directed this video! #cleanair #cleanairforall

Last weekend, students from CFROG’s youth Environmental Voices Academy (EVA) participated in a microplastics and water quality lab at CSUCI with Dr. Sean Anderson. Students collected water samples from rain barrels, streams, and taps then examined these samples for the presence of microplastics. Utilizing a Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, students were able to determine the make-up and source of the microplastics in their samples! The last two images show what we observed under the microscope from rainwater and tap water samples.
Learn more about EVA and how to get involved in our bio 🔗!

In this marine debris Monday post, we highlight Environmental Science and Resource Management capstone student Adriana Stovall. Adriana’s work assessing marine debris monitoring protocols will help inform SRIRS’s marine debris program and how we move forward with our next phase of marine debris monitoring and removal. Adriana’s capstone journey has placed her in meetings with the team at the NOAA Marine Debris Program and on the beaches of Santa Rosa Island removing debris.

10 years ago I was a Jr. #ecologist

I worked for @channelislandsnps and @usgs through a partnership with @the_sca. On these islands I learned to take safety in the outdoors very seriously. People have gotten lost and died at National Parks. My days consisted of hiking on rough terrain with 35lbs worth of research gear, identifying plant and bird species, using field technology like @garmin gps mapping systems and retrofitted precipitation monitors.

Some days I hosted student and volunteer groups. There was a juvenile wooly mammoth discovered during my time, on a trail I trekked through multiple times!

I had this rugged laptop I was able to drop 20 feet (I never did), I'd use it to download data to bring back to the mainland and measure any amount of water (rain, sea fog, ground moisture) that some endangered oaks were clinging to on arid mountain peaks. These trees were hundreds of years old!

I often reminisce on how that connection to nature and protecting wild places and it's ecosystems, led me to urban environments. How do we make our cities healthier? Greener? More sustainable and less sprawling?

I'm still trying to figure that out, but I'm hopeful. And thankful for programs like @the_sca making me, probably one of the first Black people to work on @channelislandsnps. Funding programs like these directly impact access for BIPoC folks- to employment in STEM fields. 🙏🏾

Also, I still wear that @patagonia shirt, @patagoniaslc 😜
