Love them or hate them the AR-7 is THE iconic survival rifle.

Long the choice of movie assassins (and even James Bond) this collapsible rifle is a perfect woods gun to include in a vehicle survival kit or bug out bag.

I’ve definitely talked about this one before, but I can’t understate the energy that this rifle brought to my childhood wilderness adventures. The Old Man acquired it originally as a “rabbit hunting gun” when he was working for a stint in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. Though the original version was an Armalite, his was the Charter Arms version - made more reliable by a light sanding of the feed ramp and judicious selection in ammunition - i.e. copper-jacketed always seemed to have less of a problem than pure lead nosed 22LR rounds.

The pictures show the rifle as part of a well-rounded woods survival kit, followed by an old-school advertisement extolling its virtues, including its ability to float in water - an attribute I thankfully haven’t yet gotten to try out in real life.

See you on down the trail!

My good friend @estelawilded recently put me in touch with an MRE company that is doing things differently. The folks at @essentialprovisionsllc create their meals using real food and nothing else. Take a look at the ingredients. There are no mystery preservatives or other chemicals added! The Bison Stew is the first meal I’ve tried so far. The verdict? It’s delicious!!!!! Are you an @lodestonetrainingandconsulting Light Fighter? This is the food you should have in your ruck! #essentialprovisions #mre #wholefood #lightfighter #

Rainy day training! Got out this weekend, and did some wet weather fire practice. Always good to see where you’re at, and find your benchmark!

Fall hunting season is finally here!

Managed to sneak out after work Friday to one of our local pheasant spots, stocked by @nhfishandgame No luck that afternoon, but the next morning the boy and I headed back to poke around for a couple of hours.

It was a great opportunity to get his new @beretta_usa A300 into the field and put my Silver Pigeon to work where it belongs, rather than just breaking clays.

My two-legged bird dog was doing a fine job getting into position for a shot, but I got lucky when the bird came my way. One pheasant for the bag and a great morning spent together in the field.

Back home to relax and watch the new film by @agentlemansodyssey featuring @estelawilded

And to round out the weekend, a night in the city with the lovely bride to see Outlander in Concert @outlander_starz

Quite the sporting weekend!

The sheath to the left is a solid purchase from @estelawilded .
But when you own several SAK sometimes they need homes too. So this was a great rainy day project!. Thanks for the quick shipping and quality sheath.

Learning how to make vessels in the woods is super important! This technique uses fire to hollow out a log, and make a concavity!
