[Espanฬƒol Abajo] The third edition of Apantle began its activities with a walking tour around Washington Square Park with artist kL. We embarked on a journey through ecology, colonialism, and slavery in a landscape shaped by its waterways. Minetta Brook still runs beneath the cityโ€™s development. Water remembers, and water remains connected to the resistance and lives of the people who once inhabited what was known as Little Africa. We were also joined by a river made of wishes and the bodies of The Coyote Congregation, as part of an itinerant performance during Climate Week. Emprendimos un recorrido por la ecologiฬa, el colonialismo y la esclavitud en un paisaje definido por sus cuerpos de agua. Minetta Brook todaviฬa corre bajo el desarrollo de la ciudad. El agua recuerda y permanece vinculada con la resistencia y las vidas de quienes alguna vez habitaron lo que se conocioฬ como Little Africa. This show charts a map of divergent paths within a loving whole. Each artist is carving out a space for the fantastic and futuric to converge with the particularities of lineage and ancestral tradition. The material conventions within this show are varied and multi-valent: spanning organic matter, found ephemera, oil paints and industrial material. What emerges is both distillation and potential energyโ€“โ€“the artists move from moments of contemplative, graphic rendering to explosive, brushy wall installations to hard-edged sculpture. There is no single path forward, and this show celebrates the juncture as a site of creation.
