The English Amateur Championship Trophy will belong to another county for the next 12 months having spent the last 2 years in Essex. 😢

Ethan suffered defeat in a tight match this morning, losing in the round of 32 up the last.

Adam came up against a player who was hot which can happen at any time and will return home licking his wounds no doubt.

Charlie was our sole survivor in the last 16 and having battled away for 4 days straight, losing on the 18th will be a bitter pill to swallow with the quarter-finals within touching distance.

Unlucky lads but we’re certain that once you get home and decompress, the reflections will tell you that it’s been a good week for you all.

Keep those heads held high.

Day 3 of the English Amateur and day 1 of the matchplay was eventful for our Essex contingent.

Hot off the back of his strong strokeplay performance, Ethan continued his impressive ways with a solid 2&1 victory to progress to the final 32. 👏

Also through are Adam Murphy with another 2&1 victory and Charlie Croker with a victory at the 2nd extra hole. 👏

Charlie was up against a local golfer to Beau Desert, James Galvin, and was behind with 3 holes to play.

With true Essex grit, Charlie found the magic to take his match to extra holes and close out the win. 💪

Not quite so lucky was Henry Linley. Having been one of the final qualifiers for the matchplay stage, he was up against the 2nd seed and took the match to extra holes before going down on the 19th. 💔

Hard luck Henry.

So, four become three for Essex as the physical demand steps up.

Win this morning and a last 16 clash awaits this afternoon.

Keeping pushing on lads, we’re cheering you all on.

Golf is brutal at times. 💔

A cracking front nine was undone in four holes for reigning English Amateur Champion Henry Styles yesterday.

All credit to Henry, after dropping five shots in four holes to move outside of the cutline he regrouped with four pars before birdieing the last to be in with a shot of making the matchplay stage.

Unfortunately, despite finishing in a tie for 58th spot, count back rules meant his last nine holes cost him with 15 scores being calculated to find seven golfers to progress.

Missing the cut on count back in defence of his title is just brutal. Unlucky Henry.

On the flip side, Ethan backed up his opening 67 with a second 67 and qualified for the knockout stage ranked 3rd at -8. 👏

Charlie Croker fired a blistering second round of 66 to qualify in 24th, Adam Murphy finished at -1 for his two rounds for 43rd qualifying spot and finishing on +1 alongside our defending champion, Henry Linley benefited from the countback process to qualify 63rd. Well played gents. 👏

Others that narrowly missed out included Essex Amateur Champion Ollie Baker & Timmy Moncur, both finishing at +2, just one shot off the mark.

Dan Nicholls, Toby Peters and Mason Barningham all went close too.

Hard luck to those that miss out but a huge good luck to our matchplay qualifiers.

Enjoy the challenge and go battle hard. 💪

🥊 𝟔𝟒 𝐒𝐄𝐓 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐊𝐍𝐎𝐂𝐊𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐆𝐄𝐒!

Another fine day of scoring to finish off the stroke play stages of the English Men’s Amateur!

Well done to Stanley Campbell who finished top of the leaderboard on -9 overall, thanks to the joint-course record at Beau Desert of -6, with Charlie Preston and Ethan Roos just a shot back.

Elsewhere, there some sensational rounds of 7-under at Sutton Coldfield, as well as a 145-yard eagle for England Squad player Jake Sowden!

Read the report and find out who’s playing who in the last 64 of the match play tomorrow (link in story) 🔗

Giving a balanced breakdown on round 1 is not easy given the first two rounds are across two different courses, Beau Desert is Par 70 and Sutton Coldfield is Par 72.

The scoring will even out after two rounds with players alternating across the two courses.

A few notables from Day 1.

Ethan Roos needs to look back on what he had for breakfast yesterday and have more of the same for the rest of the week.

A -5 score of 67 tells part of the story however after his first 7 holes he was -7 with 5 birdies and an eagle.

Great opening round Ethan. 👏

Adam Crawley from Stock Brook Manor cruised round with 16 pars, a birdie and an eagle in his opening -3 score of 69. 👏

Frankie, Timmy and Henry Styles returned level par 72’s along with Adam Murphy who shot 70 for his level par.

Mason, Toby and Daniel all sit at +1.

The top 64 qualify for the match play stages (64th place is currrently level par) so a good second round is the order of the day in round 2 for all the Essex contingent.

Good luck today chaps, stay hydrated, keep cool let the magic happen.

The English Amateur Championship is a big one and it begins today.

Over the years Essex has had its fair share of winners, Todd Clements in 2017, Harley Smith 2024 and our current reigning champion Henry Styles to name just 3.

Previous winners include the likes of Tommy Fleetwood, Danny Willet, Paul Casey, Sir Nick Faldo etc.

At the last count, we have 24 players on the start sheet for rounds 1 & 2 in a field of 288 players.

After 2 rounds of strokeplay, 64 players will progress to the matchplay stages where it will then be 4 days of matchplay for those that make the final.

We’ll be tracking the Essex boys and wishing each and everyone one of them well.

Good luck gang, can Essex 3 consecutive winners…. We think so.

Regional qualifying for The Open is always an exciting day of golf and with our Essex amateurs spread across a number of courses it’s not been easy to track everyone (so apologies if we’ve missed anyone who has made it to final qualifying).

From what we can see, Rayleigh’s Harley Smith made it through with a 3 under par score of 69 at Moor Park via a playoff.

Lewis Wright of Chelmsford was also involved in the Moor Park playoff and is a reserve.

Former Essex amateur champion, Arron Edwards-Hill went low at Gog Magog and progressed following his 5 under par round of 65.

Mayland’s Sam Epstein also qualified from Gog Magog thanks to his score of 67.

Josh Hussein was involved in a Gogs playoff and has a high ranked reserve allocation.

Charles Morgan of Three Rivers and Ethan Roos of Thorndon Park suffered playoff heartbreak after both shooting 3 under par rounds of 69 at Chart Hills and their fate also depends on the progress of the reserve list.

As outlined at the start, if we’ve missed anyone huge apologies.

Well done to Harley, Arron and Sam, final qualifying awaits you and to those with reserve places, our fingers are crossed that a spot opens up for you.

Today is regional qualifying for the biggest and best tournament in the world, The 154th Open Championship.

Having scoured the start sheets of the 16 different host venues, Essex have around 30 players hoping to post a low one and take their first steps to The Open Championship next month.

Courses being played today include, Gog Magog, Rochester & Cobham, North Hants, Moor Park and Chart Hills to name 5 of the 16 across the UK.

There are too many players to give a mention to (and include in the image) however we will be thinking of you all and wish everyone all the luck in the world.

A good score today and final qualifying awaits where absolutely anything can happen.

It’s a big day for 5 of our talented Essex golfers as they put their game to the test in the pre-qualifying for the British Amateur Championship which takes place next week.

West Lancs is the course hosting pre-qualifying, which is a tough test of golf at the best of times.

With 72 elite players battling it out for 23 available spots in next weeks field, a solid round will do it and all 5 know they have it in their locker.

Awaiting the qualifiers in the main event will be fellow Essex Amateurs, Harley Smith (Rayleigh) and Charlie Rusbridge (Colne Valley), who have the privilege of exempt status, but more on that next week.

The British Amateur Championship is the flagship event in the amateur golf calendar with the winner of the main event gaining a start in The Open, The US Open and the US Masters.

One incredible week could be truly life changing.

Good luck today lads, play well, make the magic happen and get yourselves into the mix for next week. 💪

We’ll be cheering you on back home.
