Let’s write some poems together, yes?

I am pleased to offer POETRY TOOLBOX this winter quarter through UCLA Writers’ Program. Starts Monday, January 26. It’s a fast - but engaging six weeks. Our guest poet is Tim Seibles, former Poet Laureate of Virginia. Tim is an aficionado both in technical skill and performance. He’s one of the best poets working.

We will explore titles, first lines, last lines, as well as techniques for sharpening figurative language. We will review essential vocabulary and learn to embrace meter (it’s not painful, promise!) We will read and discuss work from a wide range of contemporary poets. We we will examine the layers of our own work finding courage to allow our poetic voices to emerge.

A challenging course, but one where you are supported and inspired. We laugh and sometimes we cry. We always leave more confident and joyful about our art and place in it.

It’s official, not just any red branch, but The Red Branch!
My debut novel is published today. I hope you’ll enjoy the wild mix of San Francisco history, crime, and a few larger-than-life characters.

Bustling docks, saloons on every corner, immigrant families making their way in a city still half-wild. North Beach, San Francisco was noisy, rough-edged, and never quiet. Into this world walks my character, Ophelia Williams, a Californian medic who refused to stay on the sidelines. Clever, fearless, and working as a police doctor in 1883 San Francisco, she stood out in a man’s world. She asked the right questions, had a talent for getting under people’s skin, and made herself impossible to ignore.

Ep. 166: Pyramid Scheme

We are joined by former CBB coach and author of Big Time Rus Bradburd to discuss the myriad problems in higher education and college sport today as well as meta questions about how to deliver that critique.

This book becomes less of a satire and more of a documentary by the day. It is prescient!
