Sitaare zameen par…. Life has a funny way of giving you moments you never planned for….a phone call from Zakir (@zakirkhan_208) and suddenly the following 72 hours I was among the stars.

A few lunches, dinners and (very) late snacking sessions recently turned into some truly wonderful conversations with Nandita Das, Mahesh Kale, Kausar Munir, Kaushiki Chakrabarti, Shreya Ghoshal and Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi. And throw in the amazing folks from the SALA festival, MEHFIL band INDIA INCLUSION FOUNDATION for added spark.

Different worlds. Different journeys. Different stories….but such inspiring, grounded and generous people.

I loved the fact that these weren’t formal introductions or “celebrity encounters.” They were simply people sitting around a table, talking, laughing, sharing stories and getting to know one another.

I learned something from every conversation. And I left each one feeling a little richer for having been there.

Grateful to Zakir for bringing these people into my orbit and, more importantly, for creating the opportunity for these conversations to happen.

Some of the best gifts in life aren’t things. They’re people, conversations and moments you didn’t see coming.

At most Indian restaurants, I’ll try a few things — but butter chicken always ends up being my favorite.

Here at Ettan, I still order it. Butter naan, coconut rice, the whole thing. But everything else I’ve tried here has been just as good.

The Ananas Pani Puri stopped me: crisp semolina shells filled with pineapple-mint and tangy kokum chutney. And the Ettan Salad — which changes with the season — was one I ordered on a whim and ended up loving.

Drinks-wise, I’ve worked through the lassis, the chai, the Bangalore Days. No misses yet.

The space is beautiful, but that’s not why I keep coming back. I leave remembering what I ate — then I catch myself craving it again.

ettan is a modern indian restaurant in palo alto and 2026 james beard award nominee

what i ordered
- lamb galouti kebab: 7.5/10 || lamb kebab balls were moist with good seasoning on a saffron bread. nothing significantly memorable
- sesame leaf: 9/10 || surprisingly i really loved this bite. the crispy sesame leaf was topped with yogurt and mango making a sweet, savory and crunchy bite
- railway patti samosa: 8/10 || samosa wasn't too oily and topped with green apple for freshness
- chicken biryani + vellore chicken curry: 8/10 || both the biryani and curry were seasoned well and very filling
- mango yogurt creme brulee: 8.5/10 || mango flavor really came through, smooth creme brulee
- carrot kulfi bar: 7/10 || thought i would enjoy this more but the malai flavor was a little strong

i enjoyed my dinner at ettan, although it was pricy with smaller portion sizes (but expected for palo alto). the food wasn't as authentic but tasty and the ambiance is beautiful. i can see people coming here for a special occasion but i probably won't return for a casual dinner anytime soon
