AND HERE WE MEET

Trust

“It is the beauty of holding space for each other and building trust…”

From And Here We Meet: Choreography at the edge of time (Theater der Zeit, 2025).

Trust is often understood as confidence. Through choreography, I have come to know it differently. More and more, I experience trust as a quality of presence.

It begins with the way we are with one another. How we observe. How we attend. How we stay. In the studio, I rarely speak very much. I offer something for investigation, then I wait. I give space and time before I intervene, perhaps adding another layer of information, another invitation to look. Gradually, a choreography begins to emerge, not because I have explained it, but because someone has had the opportunity to discover it for themselves.

Over the years I have realised that this way of working asks something of me before it asks anything of the dancer. It asks for patience. I often have a clear sense of where we are going, but I don’t want to take away the dancer’s opportunity to discover the path. I want the work to become their experience as much as it is mine. Again and again, I am reminded that the deepest understanding is rarely the one that is given, it is the one that is discovered.

This is what trust has come to mean for me, holding space for another person without stepping into it for them. Remaining present long enough for something unexpected to emerge. Trust is not the absence of uncertainty. It is the willingness to stay with it.
