Since October is National Estate Planning Month, here’s today’s tip:

If you already have an estate plan, when was the last time you actually looked at it? 🧐

Life changes. We get married, 💒divorced, 💔have children 👶🏻👶🏻👶🏻👶🏻👶🏻👶🏻👶🏻👶🏻and grandchildren, 👶🏻👶🏻👶🏻👶🏻👶🏻👶🏻👶🏻👶🏻buy and sell real estate, 🏘️and unfortunately, sometimes we lose people we love. 🪦😔

Your estate plan should change as your life changes.

It’s time to review those documents!!! Are the right people still listed? 🫣Do your beneficiaries reflect what you want today? 🙄Does your plan include the real estate 🏡and other assets you currently own?🤔

Having an estate plan is great. Having an estate plan that actually reflects your life today is even better, so don’t put it off!

Many Happy Hearts has been an organization that Douglas and I have been proud to be part of for over 10 years. This year, they celebrate an incredible 20 years of making a difference. ❤️

At the heart of it all are Janet and Jose, two extraordinary people who continue to inspire us with their generosity and dedication. Their impact goes far beyond the children and families they serve at Chapman Partnership. They also open the eyes and hearts of volunteers to a world many of us might otherwise never experience.

We are grateful to play even a small part in the incredible work they do.

And in true Janet and Jose fashion, at an event meant to celebrate their 20 years of giving, they somehow found a way to honor us with the Celebrating the Hearts Behind the Mission award.

While we are truly honored by this recognition, the real honor has been knowing you both, witnessing the lives you’ve touched, and being part of the annual toy drive year after year.

Janet and Jose, there really aren’t enough words to express the impact you’ve had on us and the joy you’ve brought into so many lives.

Happy 😀 Tuesday 👋 Have you been saying, “I really need to get my Will done…”?

For our final Tip Tuesday during National Make-A-Will Month, estate planning attorney Carlos Aguila of Aguila Law and I wanted to take away one of the biggest excuses many of us have:
“I don’t even know where to start.” 🫣
The good news? You don’t need to have everything figured out before meeting with an estate planning attorney. That’s what they’re there for. ❤️
The bigger question is: What happens if you keep putting it off?
If you don’t make your wishes known and put the proper estate plan in place, Florida law may ultimately determine what happens to your assets and, unfortunately, that may not be what you would have chosen. ☹️
Estate planning isn’t about focusing on the day you won’t be here. It’s about what you can do today to give yourself peace of mind and your family clarity for tomorrow.😌
I’ve seen personally how difficult things can become for a family when everything isn’t planned ahead. And I’ve also experienced the peace of mind that comes from knowing a parent has taken the time to put their wishes in place.

Here is our challenge:

Stop 🛑 thinking about it and take the first step. Make the appointment. 📅 Your family will be grateful you did. ❤️

For today’s Tip Tuesday, I sat down with estate planning attorney Carlos Aguila of Aguila Law to answer an important question during National Make-A-Will Month.😉

A few takeaways from our conversation:
👉 Having a Will does not necessarily mean your estate will avoid probate. A Will provides instructions to the probate court about how you want your assets distributed.
👉 Depending on your family, your assets, and your goals, a Will alone may not be enough.
👉 If you own a home, rental or investment properties, property in another state, or have specific wishes for how your assets should be distributed, it’s worth talking with an estate planning attorney about whether additional planning may be appropriate.

The biggest takeaway? 🤓
Estate planning isn’t simply deciding, “Do I need a Will or a Trust?” It’s sitting down with a qualified professional, 👨‍⚖️👩‍⚖️explaining what you own, who you want to protect, and what you want to accomplish, and then creating a plan that’s right for YOU and YOUR family.

August is National Make-A-Will Month, so if you’ve been saying, “I need to take care of that…” maybe this is your reminder. 😉
