State 25 Alaska

Part 2

I had to make this halibut trip a separate post because of how crazy it was. We were told that halibut fishing would be slow because of how there was not a lot of current.

My dad hooked into a big fish and with how it was fighting it was thought to be a skate. After reeling in for 40 minutes we were finally able to see that it was a giant halibut. Soon after, 2 more decent sized halibut were brought into the boat. There was no way that we would beat that. But the last fish that was reeled in was even bigger than my dad’s halibut.

You would hear this story and not believe it so here are the pictures.

Last picture is some halibut blood on my face after drinking a beer off my dad’s halibut tail. Also known as a butt chug.

I am officially half way there!

I have always dreamed of coming to Alaska and it did not disappoint.

This was a special trip because my parents joined me and I was able to share my love for fishing with them. Not only did I enjoy the views but the highlight of my trip was watching my parents hook and reel in their own fish.

This year was a bittersweet end to my 20s. I had the best year of my life and here are some of the highlights.

🎣 I fished in 18 states. (19 if you count Colorado but I want to save it as my last state in my 50 states series). I met anglers all throughout the country and learned more than I ever could about fishing. My 2 favorite states were of course Florida and Minnesota.
🌺 I traveled to some of the most beautiful places in the country. My favorites being Hawaii and the Florida Keys.
💻 I work a fulfilling job remotely that allows me to travel to all these places all year long.
💪 Completed my first bulk confidently and have the most positive relationship with my body.
Honorable mention: Took my dad out fishing and watched him catch his biggest fish and having him tell me it was the best fishing trip he has been on.

If anyone in their 20s is reading this, the best advice I can give is live your life, make mistakes, figure out what you want to be when you grow up. Heck I am still figuring it out. You might feel like you’re falling behind in life but you are not.

Thanks to all who have followed along my journey.

I don’t know how I am going to top it next year but I sure as heck am going to try.

State #18 Missouri

On my way back home to Colorado @evancoxfishing and I thought we would challenge ourselves and try to fish in 2 states, Missouri and Kansas. We started at Harry S Truman reservoir in Missouri and I guess Evan had all the luck because he caught all the bass and all I caught was some crappie. There are a lot of lakes I want to fish in Missouri so I will definitely be back!

We were able to make it to Milford lake in Kansas right as the sun was setting and we put in a lot of effort with no reward. I guess the goal was to fish in 2 states in one day but I definitely can’t count Kansas since no fish was caught. I will have to come back a later date to catch a fish in Kansas but what a crazy day that was. Gotta love the chase.

My last picture was my first attempt at catching a fish in Missouri while passing through one morning and all that happened was I lost 2 bass.

State #11 Ohio

I spent the morning at Alum Creek Lake and it was a lot harder than I anticipated. I missed every single bite and questioned my abilities as an angler. Even worse was watching Evan catching fish next to me. Although I did not catch anything on the lake, I was able to practice using forward facing sonar and cast my lure in front of fish and learn their behavior.

I did not want to leave Ohio without catching a fish so at the spillway I caught a couple small smallmouth on a JDM bug. Even though they were small I was excited to catch a couple before heading down to the next state.

State #10 New York

I did not get the chance to get out on the water as much as I wanted to but upstate New York was unforgettable. We stayed on Lake Champlain and what a beautiful place it is. We even made it to a cute little apple orchard.

I made it up to Chazy Lake and caught some smallmouth on a finesse jig. I spent a little time on a kayak out on Lake Champlain but the fish were just too smart for me. On our way out of the state, we stopped to fish under a couple bridges, which is one of my favorite places to catch fish.

Evan fished his first EQ and was fishing in six foot waves. He’s not thrilled about how he placed but he is eager to get to his second EQ at Wheeler Lake in just a week. See you soon, Alabama!
