WHEN DID THE SUMMIT BECOME MORE IMPORTANT THAN LIFE?

What happened on Himlung Himal is a tragedy that cannot simply be blamed on “the mountain.”

15 Nepali mountain workers are dead, and one remains missing.

I started climbing in 2004. I have watched the Himalayas become increasingly commercial more companies, more competition, more clients, and unfortunately, more pressure to succeed.

We saw the consequences of extreme commercial pressure before, including the 1996 Everest disaster, when eight people lost their lives.

After I raised concerns about Himlung, I was accused by Imagine Nepal of speaking for “business” and “marketing.”

What business?

I don’t commercially guide 8,000-metre mountains. I climb for causes much bigger than myself.

This is about the Sherpas, guides, cooks and mountain workers whose families expect them to come home.

Questions must be asked. Decisions must be examined. And accountability matters.

No summit, no client and no business is worth a human life.

The mountains will always be there. People may not be.

May they all rest in peace. #HimlungHimal #MountainSafety #Mountaineering #Himalayas #respectthemountain

Day two at Himlung Base Camp.

Rescuers have recovered two more bodies, bringing the confirmed death toll to four. Twelve workers are still missing after Sunday’s avalanche buried the base camp under around 14 feet of snow.

The workers were preparing the camp and fixing ropes ahead of the autumn climbing season. No foreign climbers were involved.

The rescue team, led by Mingma G. Sherpa and NNMGA guides, reached the camp hoping to find survivors. The search is now focused on recovery as conditions remain difficult.

Our thoughts are with the families and colleagues of those still missing and those who have lost their lives.

Deadly Himlung Avalanche: Rescue teams have reached the avalanche site at Himlung Himal, where two guides have been confirmed dead and 14 others remain missing. The rescue is being led by Mingma G, who is once again at the center of a high-risk mountain rescue just seven weeks after leading the difficult search and recovery effort following the deadly Broad Peak avalanche.

It has been a heartbreaking year for Mingma G, and for Nepal’s mountain community, marked by repeated loss, dangerous rescues and families still waiting for answers.

Manaslu’s busiest season ever challenged by terrible weather and an impending cyclone. Hoping for a safe but abridged season and we check in on Nepals flood recovery efforts almost one month on.

The Manaslu rope-fixing team went back up after an avalanche buried the ropes they had already fixed, rebuilding the route toward the summit.

Now, hundreds of climbers will follow the same ropes on their summit push many of them never knowing the nine men who fixed them, lost them, and fixed them again.

But with snow now falling on Manaslu, the mountain may force another pause. The route is open, but the summit push will depend on what the mountain and weather allow.

Remember the team behind the ropes.
