Without necessarily meaning to, @evanyturk1 explains why PWN-USA does voter engagement work. Not to get people to vote the way we want them to but to ensure their voices are heard and needs addressed.

In a conversation with @everyblackbody and @blacksouthrising at #USCHA2026, Evany explained that it is her responsibility to speak to her son and his friends about the essentiality of voting. Because they don’t understand that it is a mechanism of wielding power on their behalf and creating a world that responds to their needs.

That is how HIV got funding and our policies implemented: Voting for people who responded to our advocacy, activism, and needs.

Listen to the full clip and take Evany’s wisdom in.

Overdose deaths may be going down nationally, but DOWN doesn’t mean DONE. And headlines don’t always tell the whole story about what’s happening in Black communities, actually they try to water it down.

Carry naloxone. Learn how to use it. Teach somebody else. 🖤

Black lives include Black people who use drugs. DASSIT, that’s the line. BAI.

This weekend, I had the distinct honor of serving as a panelist for The Politicization of Health Care discussion at Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy Black Policy Conference. I was privileged to share space with NC Senator Natalie Murdock and Dr. Jovita Lee, under the thoughtful moderation of Andrea Thoumi.

Our conversation centered on how policy decisions shape who has access to care, whose health outcomes are prioritized, and how structural inequities continue to influence the lived experiences of Black communities across North Carolina and beyond. We explored how the politicization of health care often determines funding streams, reproductive autonomy, Medicaid access, HIV prevention efforts, and the very trust communities place in health systems. When health becomes political, equity can become optional, and that is a reality we must continue to challenge.

As someone deeply committed to advancing health equity, it was powerful to engage in dialogue that named these truths directly. We discussed not only the barriers created by shifting policies, but also the opportunities for advocacy, coalition building, and community driven solutions that center those most impacted.

Most inspiring of all was witnessing the brilliance and urgency of the students in attendance. Their questions reflected clarity, courage, and a deep desire to build a more just health system. Seeing the next generation of policy leaders leaning into these conversations reminds me that equity work is not only necessary, it is in capable hands.

Grateful for the opportunity, the exchange of ideas, and the continued commitment to ensuring that health care is treated not as a privilege shaped by politics, but as a fundamental human right grounded in justice.

Today, February 7 is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. #NBHAAD

📊 Black communities continue to face a disproportionate impact of HIV: in 2023, Black people accounted for 38% of new diagnoses and nearly half of new diagnoses among youth, yet only 15% of PrEP users.

These gaps reflect structural barriers, racism, and inequality.

This #NBHAAD, center Black voices and support Black-led HIV organizations. Follow the linked orgs who are leading the way🔗

You are invited to join an open, timely, and impactful community conversation in observance of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

Conversations about Black health, particularly sexual health, mental health, and substance use, are often avoided or left unspoken. Yet these are the very conversations necessary to reduce stigma, increase access to care, and improve health outcomes. This discussion, titled Let’s Talk About It, is designed to intentionally create space for honesty, learning, and shared understanding.

This community centered dialogue will bring together leaders, professionals, advocates, and community members to share insights, elevate awareness, and engage in meaningful conversation around HIV prevention, care, and overall comprehensive health.

Our goal is to uplift voices, share resources, strengthen partnerships, and move toward collective action. We hope you will join us and be part of this important dialogue.

Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (SHAAD) is recognized each year on August 20. This day shines a light on the disproportionate impact of HIV across the Southern United States. States in the "Deep South" including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas continue to face some of the highest rates of HIV in the nation. #SHAAD
