In 1992, curator @therealpaulschimmel changed the perception that the art world had of Los Angeles in his seminal @moca show Helter Skelter. But anyone who was actually participating in our underground art scene during that time knew that what was happening here, was massive, and had already changed the visual aesthetics of planet earth. Every time I walk into the massive @superchiefgalleryla art space, I’m hit with the same 1992 buzz. That city-wide, we’re all living on a knife edge of activism, creativity, and entrepreneurship that the world is depending on for inspiration, fortitude, and leadership. From parks to streets to galleries to museums, CD13 is the pulse that drives the city’s gateways to @downtown_la , @ktownforall , and the @greaterwilshire corridor. Our excellence drives their excellence which drives the world’s excellence. That @LACE @laluzdejesus and @marta drive @zwirner and @marciano which drives downtown’s @superchief and @mistakeroom which drives hifi’s @2220arts, @echopark’s @stories, and @atwater village’s @secretheadquarters. The sum total of the scenes they represent are exponentially birthing the next generation of the underground via their connections to tech and media with minimal (if any) city support. It’s time that CD13 acknowledges that this economic engine must be kept healthy even through the hard times. These places are important city services where representation and social criticism build a moral core into the city itself. CD13 has plenty of room for brokering the underground to invest in our major corridors of Sunset, Hollywood, Western, Beverly, Virgil, Glendale, Vermont. They will attract support services like restaurants, street vendors, pop ups. Proper management will make streets safer and encourage more public transit services for extended hours and walkability. This will drive wages, tourism, and tax dollars to invest back into essential constituent services. So that’s what I’m going to do.

Photos taken by the talented @blindings0n Model: @1vy.007 24x36 oil and acrylic over matte print For the BLEND show @nogiftshop curated by @finitojuarez & @filmdotorg A show where artist and photographers collaborate This piece or more likely the experience behind this piece I had with Mario and Ivy was so inspiring. From the moment we had our first introduction over the phone, to meeting up for coffee, and finally doing the shoot, it was such pleasure. Being able to connect with another creative individual and sharing a space where ideas and thoughts are running all over the place is a connection I’m always craving. Being part of the shoot, helping set up, and seeing Mario work meant so much to me. Sharing a creative space isn’t always easy, it can be uncomfortable but that uncomfortableness is something we wanted to explore. We felt like we should push the boundaries. We wanted something different. Our views on art are very similar and that’s what made this happen. Having @1vy.007, @blindings0n, and @evilfaery around me from the beginning to the end I had so much to think about. The accumulation of everything that went into this has broadened my view for the new year.
