HEAR ME OUT: M. Night Shyamalan is one of our best genre filmmakers.

This Halloween season, The Evolution of Horror’s Mike Muncer joins Empire to make the case for the filmmaker behind The Sixth Sense, Signs, Split, Old and more — and explain why he’s one of the most interesting filmmakers working today.

90s Era Timelapse

Been waiting a long time to represent this decade. There’s a ton of highs and lows, both in the movies and real life. This piece was done with @posca_usa markers.

The research took 2 months, the sketch took 2 months and final application took 8 days 8am-8pm. Still am not completely finished down there at the bottom but it felt fitting with finishing up with Y2K 😁

This was signed by a couple Resident evil alumni! Had to add some 90s video games as well as film.

THEY LIED.
We can stop repeating it.

The glasses in John Carpenter’s They Live reveal what power wants hidden. This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, let’s turn that lens toward the history many of us were taught.

We called it “discovery,” although Indigenous peoples had lived here for tens of thousands of years. We celebrated explorers while minimizing enslavement, dispossession, and forced removal. Those omissions change whose suffering counts—and whose achievements we recognize. (americanindian.si.edu)

We called it “education” when federal Indian boarding school policies separated children from their families and sought to erase their languages and cultures. The Interior Department’s 2024 investigation confirmed that at least 973 children died while attending federally operated or supported schools. (doi.gov)

How do we uncover the truth? Start with the people whose voices were excluded.

Read Indigenous authors. Learn from Tribal nations’ own histories. Listen to survivors. Compare the textbook with the historical record. Ask: Who told this story? Who was left out? Who benefited?

And remember: Indigenous peoples are here—creating, leading, protecting their cultures, and shaping our shared future. This day honors living communities as well as ancestors. (americanindian.si.edu)

For those of us who are guests on Indigenous homelands, learning should lead to action: support Indigenous-led work, respect sovereignty, and make room for truths that challenge our comfort.

Put on the glasses. Then listen.

We're always adding to the archive 🕯️

I’ve been restocking the walls of my research library (spending way too much money on books 👀), and I’m so excited to sink my teeth into these four. In classic Alice fashion I've actually started reading all four of these already in small parts because my attention adores a shiny new text to dig it's claws into...

🩸 Scream With Me, Eleanor Johnson - on female survival, tropes, and the gendered gaze in modern horror

🎞️ How to Read a Film, James Monaco - an essential refresh on the foundations: visual language, editing, and technical form shape

🎙️ The Evolution of Horror, Mike Muncer - tracing horror’s historical context through subgenre, i've been listening to @evolutionofhorror for years so this one means a lot!

💋 Dead Pretty by @thenottinghamhorrorcollective - obsessed with this community print exploring aging, beauty standards, and the grotesque: basically girl horror through and through!

I want to share notes, quotes, and micro-reviews as I work my way through these so keep an eye out if you're interested 🎀

At 3:33 a.m., the scratching stopped.

Something had learned to turn the doorknob.

Hello, fellow APE(x) species member. Welcome to ape shIT—where Cujo meets a power-drunk primate, and the horror wears a flag pin.

On the White House roof, an orange clown feeds on fear. Below, people learn to call cruelty strength. A dark-orange balloon floats above the mess.

Nobody mentions the smell anymore.
That’s the frightening part.

With a bow to Stephen King—and to every empathic commoner who wakes in the night, reaches for someone they love, and realizes the nightmare didn’t end when their eyes opened.

I see you. Some nights, I’m you.

But orange magic has an antidote.

People who still give a damn. Who check on a neighbor. Refuse an order to dehumanize. Make room at the table. Rest, regroup, and show up again.

Fascism would love us frightened, isolated, and too exhausted to imagine another ending.

This unapologetic apeologist has other plans.

My award-winning a three body solution imagines queer love, compersion, and interdependence as possibilities for our evolution. Three bodies daring to ask what humanity could become if domination stopped being the goal.

And an apeology to actual orangutans: the costume is satire. The cruelty is ours to reckon with.

Activate your Neo-Hope superpowers, commoners.

We don’t have to float with the clown.
We can stand with each other. 🎈

It’s #SpookySeason, one and all!

Which means a month of me reading nothing but #spooky books in honour of the impending #Halloween. Beginning with this find in @calderdalelibraries, @evolutionofhorror’s new book!

Mike’s podcast has got me through many a monotonous task, so very intrigued to delve into a compendium of genre standouts. So many movies still to watch.
