POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Bringing incredible minds together inside 138-year-old historic factory @duchesschina1888 to talk about the future of British ceramics & manufacturing 🇬🇧✨

I was so proud to host and lead our Industry Day alongside the team at Duchess China 1888; we had vital conversations on our panel around education, sustainability, and passing true heritage craftsmanship down to the younger generation. If we are committed to keeping British making alive, we have to actively train and inspire the next wave of artisans🏺💡

The energy in the room was unforgettable. Surrounded by breathtaking florals by @quirky.flowers an extraordinary lunch by @cris_cohen_hidden with the most gorgeous tableware by @rrcateringhire - Jacqui was so helpful from start to finish - and plates by @duchesschina1888 with many conversations that gave us all time to reflect 🌿

We had a full factory tour led by the wonderful Jan @clutterandfettle bespoke workshops where guests could try their hand at putting handles on mugs, sponging and fettling, adding pattern to a teacup and hand painting 22carat gold onto the ceramics, and working with prestige artist @ukceramicartist to hand paint onto a Halliesphere!

Thanks to joint MD Jason Simms and the team at Duchess for giving us such an immersive day behind the scenes, and huge gratitude to @robertwadephotography our photographer, who captured so many unforgettable moments. Thank you Rob 📸

Our wonderful guestlist of industry leaders and specialists who travelled to Stoke and brought so much passion and energy to the day made it so special!

Building Halliesphere® alongside true masters of Stoke-on-Trent heritage is about making beautiful, heirloom quality products alongside protecting the craft and paving the way for future generations.

In the evening, we were delighted to welcome approximately 170 church flower arrangers, local florists, church representatives and other interested local people to 'The Art of Sustainable Church Flower Arranging' with a glass of prosecco and a slide show of photos of sustainable flower arrangements I have taken during my travels around the country, from Northumberland to Cornwall.

The Revd. Canon Sebastian Harries opened with a prayer followed by an explanation about how flowers are used in a church setting and the effect they have on people which set the scene.

I talked about the Sustainable Church Flower movement, their role in the motion being passed by the General Synod and the implications for arranging church flowers. I also gave hints and tips about suitable containers and health and safety.

Next, Linda, one of our talented Flower Guild members, gave a wonderful demonstration of a pedestal design arranged in chicken wire.

Rachael Holden, from the Freckled Foxglove, gave an interesting talk about her local flower farm near Colchester, how to grow your own cut flowers and how to cut and condition them ready for arranging.

During the interval, the visitors were able to examine the arrangements and their mechanics close up. Rachael had a table with lots of information sheets and seed catalogues from local suppliers which she handed out. Helen from Evolve Flowers kindly travelled from Spalding to support the event. She set up a stall with a wide range of sustainable products and created a large urn arrangement and a fabulous tree installation, with the help for her husband. Everyone involved was talking to the visitors, answering questions and offering handy hints.

Visitors wrote down their questions. Flower Guild Joint Chairmen, Anthea and Pippa read them out during a Q&A session and answered by Helen and myself. The questions asked for ideas for arranging through the winter months, the expected longevity of a sustainable flower arrangement, how to change the water and how best to clean chicken wire.

NB: Note to self - appoint an official photographer for the actual event next time!

Emerging……..

Well what a busy time I’ve had over the past few weeks whilst overseeing the Wild! Festival of Flowers & Nature at Winchester Cathedral 🌱
There’s so much to say about the event and my involvement with THE most amazing creative people that I don’t know where to begin but I’d like to start by sharing some of the installations with you all (especially if you didn’t get to see them)

This is the design that occupied the Crypt - such a magical space - an absolute GIFT to a designer of a flower festival ✨🙋🏼‍♀️✨

Entitled ‘Wild! Wellbeing’ it was accompanied by a soundtrack featuring voices of flower lovers relaying when and why being with flowers has been important to them and have contributed to their wellbeing 💛 if you managed to catch those voices I hope you found them as poignant, interesting and moving as I did 🙏🏻

This design was to depict a ‘floral hug’ or embrace to surround the bronze sculpture ‘Sound II’ by Anthony Gormley that stands permanently in the Crypt.

Led by Design Team Leader @katiebaxterfloraldesigner and constructed beautifully by Yasmin Reilly, Carol Jordan & Janet Bieth of Milford Floral Art together with Sue Erler & Graham King of Wessex Free Spirits a NAFAS Contemporary Flower Group.

The floral content was predominantly British Grown flowers using gorgeous materials from @evolveflowers and @floral_media as well as some from further afield from @flowervisionsouthampton.

It was so beautiful and atmospheric - just perfect 🫶🏻

Thank you to all involved for your time and energy ✨

🌿 This Mondays Fynbos Feature is the Protea Julia 🌸

This Protea is a South African hybrid prized for its striking rose-pink and white flower heads, strong stems and distinctive form.

Derived from the Protea Loriflora and the Protea Magnifica, Julia produces large, compact, ovoid flower heads. The outer bracts combine rich rose-pink tones with delicate silvery-white fringes, surrounding a soft, downy centre. 💫

Its sturdy stems and impressive length make Protea Julia particularly suited to cut flower work, premium floral arrangements and decorative displays, where its sculptural form can make a real statement.

A beautiful example of the hybrid varieties that have become part of South Africa’s specialist protea industry. 🇿🇦🌿
