POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Something I decided while training for my pilot license is the day it arrives isn’t the finish line. It’s the start line.

The flying itself was never the hard part. It’s everything around it, the planning, the judgement, the small decisions that keep you safe, that takes a lifetime to get right. A licence is a learner’s permit with better scenery.

So I made myself a promise. Keep stepping out of the comfort zone. Keep banking experience, not just hours.

Today’s flight was short, and interesting, to put it mildly. A few lessons learned the honest way, and a bit more experience in the account.

And yes that song was on my playlist while flying 😌

Onwards. ✈️

Snapped this stellar shot from my @gopro mounted under the horizontal stabilizer. A nice reminder that given the current weather summer is on its way and it doesn’t always play nice 😂

THE VIEW MOST PASSENGERS NEVER GET

Ever wondered what it feels like to watch a Boeing 737-400 leave the ground from the jumpseat?

This is the view from the flight deck as this classic workhorse powers away from O.R. Tambo International Airport, engines roaring, runway disappearing beneath you and Johannesburg opening up ahead.

No cabin window. No wing blocking the view. Just the raw perspective of a takeoff from the front office.

The 737-400 may be a classic, but moments like this remind you why these aircraft earned their place in aviation history.
Would you take a jumpseat flight if you had the chance?

Watch until the rotation and tell me what you think.

"Fly this helicopter so the gin and tonic doesn't spill in the back..." 🚁🍸
Dr. André Coetzee breaks down what it takes to fly the Bell 222 and 230—the world's first purely civilian transport helicopter.
Henley Air operates the largest fleet of these twin-engine machines globally (12 Bell 222 UTs and 4 Bell 230s). In this clip, Dr. Coetzee shares a memorable golden rule from his 1998 conversion: it’s not about flying aggressively—it’s about total finesse and smooth executive grace.

WHEN THE FLIGHTDECK LIGHTS UP… YOU KNOW IT’S TIME TO FLY.

There’s something different about seeing the world from behind the controls — the glow of the instruments, the runway ahead, and that unmistakable feeling that you’re about to leave the ground.

This is aviation stripped down to its rawest form: focus, precision, noise, and adrenaline.
But be honest… would you trust yourself in this seat at night? Or is this exactly where you’d rather be?

Tag an avgeek who needs to see this.

How did one of SA's most iconic aviation companies get its name? Completely by accident! 🚁😂
Dr. André Coetzee shares the origin story of @flyhenleyair , born back in October 1995.
While buying their very first Bell Jet Ranger, the deal urgently required a VAT and CC registration number. With no formal company registered yet, his dad told the auditors: "Just call it Henley Air, we'll change it later!"
Needless to say, the name stuck—and built an empire.

What actually makes a great commercial pilot candidate? 🚁🤔
Dr. André Coetzee, owner of @flyhenleyair , dives into the intangibles of evaluating future aviators.
It’s not just about passing exams or logging hours—it comes down to assessing raw character and subtle habits. Dr. Coetzee also shares the heart-wrenching reality of investing thousands of hours into a pilot, only for them to walk away from the industry after reaching 2,500 hours.

Should a pilot with only 200 hours be teaching new students? 🚁🤔
Dr. André Coetzee, owner of @flyhenleyair , breaks down why they actively discourage fresh commercial pilots from going straight into flight instruction.
In this teaser from our upcoming episode, Dr. Coetzee explains why having real-world flight experience—handling actual weather, technical challenges, and real decision-making—makes a far more effective instructor than using flight instruction merely as a stepping stone to build hours.
