#tbt mid-2012, when after a full year of photographers asking me to “play with my [blonde] hair” I cut it all off and dyed it black. (Actually the vegan hair salon I wandered into basically burned off but that’s another story haha). This was a pattern in my life - I would go for years with long blonde hair until I was overcome with the urge to get rid of it. Sometimes self protection looks a lot like self sabotage. Took me a long time to trace my discomfort with femme presentation to events in my childhood. It’s not something to go into over social media, but it does show up in “Memory as a Rock Out Of Reach” taking place in NYC 10/30 @roulette_intermedium and PDX 11/15 @pam_cut

On my arms are the words “A MASCULINE / FEMININE PERFECT ALLIANCE” from CRASS’s “Penis Envy” album art. Gee Vaucher probably meant it as a joke but I took it as a directive.

I'm very lucky to have talented and good people in my life that I can call friends, and I'm extra lucky and blessed that one of those friends is the artist Gee Vaucher. Gee and Penny have been working very hard to create a trust so that Dial House gets to remain a retreat for artists, activists, musicians, doers and thinkers, in perpetuity, after they've gone to live in that great punk house in the sky, and a fundraiser's been launched to help attain that goal. @inspitemagazine is selling a t-shirt bearing the image of baby Gee (!!!❤️) , the proceeds are going towards the trust. Having spent a bunch of time at DH i can attest that it's a special magical place ~ i got plenty more to say on the subject,, but for now I'll just put some links in my stories where one can contribute and//or buy a shirt ✌️

Hanover Deli aka Hangover cafe if you can’t read somewhere downtown Financial district. Nice seating area with incredible bean cast tables and great tile work in public bathroom. Veggie burger deluxe and fries 12€ which is pretty cheap these days

Congratulations to In Spite Magazine's Cat of the Month, Smudge. Smudge is head of security and Guardian of the Garden at Dial House. He is always on patrol, keeping unwelcome visitors away. According to Smudge's human, Gee Vaucher of the Gee Vaucher Foundation, which you can read about and possibly make a small contribution in the link in a delightful article with words at photos by our lovely and talented Dick Slaughter that is up now on InSpiteMagazine.com, Gee says Smudge is the only non-vegetarian resident at DH and does a fair job of keeping mice out of the house.

While many people first encounter Vaucher through her iconic visual work with Crass, her significance extends far beyond that. The mission of the Gee Vaucher Foundation is to preserve, protect and promote the artistic legacy of Gee Vaucher, one of the most important British artists of the last fifty years.

The Gee Vaucher Foundation has three key strands to its mission:

1.     To ensure that Vaucher’s body of work remains whole, accessible and safeguarded for future generations and available for public engagement, education, and inspiration.

2.     To find a permanent home for the foundation in London to house and display Vaucher’s body of work.

3.     For these premises to continue the legacy of radical creativity encouraged at Dial House, the historic home of Crass and open-house founded by Vaucher and Penny Rimbaud in 1967.

The Foundation’s mission is to help advance public education, appreciation and understanding of the arts through exhibitions, learning programmes and community engagement. As it develops, the Foundation will not only honour Gee Vaucher’s extraordinary contribution to art and activism, but also to supporting the next generation of radical creatives committed to pushing boundaries, asking difficult questions and challenging the status quo.

Meanwhile, Vaucher and Rimbaud will continue to run Dial House as they always have: welcoming visitors, hosting creative events, and offering residencies where artists and collaborators can experiment, share skills and develop independent projects rooted in progressive, radical values.

Eventually, with the demise of Vaucher and Rimbaud, Dial House will transfer into the ownership and stewardship of the Foundation, ensuring its future as a living centre for creativity, collaboration and social change.

We are now seeking donors to help make this ambition a reality. Your support will enable us to acquire and establish this permanent home, secure these irreplaceable collections for future generations, and create an enduring public resource where art, activism continue to shape one another for decades to come.

On April 10th 2027 Gee Vaucher will be showing her film ‘Angel’ followed by an interview led by Anthony McCall.

‘Oh America’ and ‘How’ with Ingrid Laubrock on saxophone.

A selection of images and closeups from my CRASS sketchbook.
This project just grew organically. No real plan or purpose.
I tried to keep a crass type ethic to this, and I recycled almost everything back into the artwork. Once my homemade stencil became useless, I stuck it into the pages. Any leftover paper, bits of tissue I cleaned my brushes on , unwanted sketches, virtually nothing went to waste.
I built up the levels of texture using a gel plate and collage. I even set fire to it.
Crass would be proud of me!

Ten years to the day when pop up art shop Grrrr! opened its doors and let a hungry public in to see ART and things! The shop was in Malden Road, Kentish Town NW5 and was run by Siân Pattenden and Pandora Vaughan. Alongside their work, we had many artists - Cathy Ward, Scott King, Jane Hoodless, KeelerTornero, Gee Vaucher and Exitstencil Press, Nick Newsam, Joe Carcary, Tessa Norton, Claire Biddles (Grrrr! two) and the first and maybe only showing ever of Terry Hall's great artwork.
We were there for a few weeks just being ART and that's also when PROTEST BISCUITS happened, after a Brexit vote and in honour of the Rock n Roll Biscuit.
More posts to follow in the next few days.
