💙That time we met ANDY💙 💙NHS midwives and birth workers from Manchester @marchwithmidwives @marchwithmidwivesmanc 💙Dear @andy.burnham do you remember us? 💙We’ve protested outside your office 4 times 💙We met you twice, you held space and listened 💙We told you in 2023 how bad things where 💙Uk and Manchester maternity units where failing 💙Midwives leaving / short unsafe staffing 💙Toxic leadership 💙Unsafe clinical practice 💙increased intervention rates 💙We told the truth (and weren’t popular for it) 💙You connected us to Members from NHSE 💙And @midwives_rcm were invited 💙We received hostility from both because we exposed the lack of action…… 💙We had short term and long term solutions 💙Eventually it all dried up ….i believe you tried Andy… 💙Now you are PM we know you know how bad it is 💙Today you have acknowledged it publicly 💙Today you said you are committed to doing more..? 💙You might want to listen to midwives again? 💙Now there’s also no jobs for newly qualified midwives trained and waiting to work? 💙After 5 years of campaigning countless reports and investigations and watching things worsen we need action not WORDS! ⚡️What would you say to @andy.burnham about maternity if you could? Today our new flock laid their first eggs. Right where we asked them too. Now, we didn’t literally have a conversation with them though I totally do talk to them - I actually think you’re weird if you don’t! What we did, is set up the environment that cued the behaviour we were after (and what is natural for a chicken)… a dark and cosy space with soft bedding and privacy from the rest of the flock. Leading to clean and nutrient dense egg that was easy to retrieve. Simple… and you’re wondering why I’m telling you something so rudimentary. But here’s the thing… we can be completely absent minded when doing this for ourselves. We spend most of the day under flickering LEDs and then wonder why we feel wired but tired and maybe have a headache. We eat foods that we didn’t evolve on and wonder why they don’t satisfy for more than a few hours and create cycles of hunger (or HANGER). We sit… and sit… and sit… and then to crush a spin session after work then wonder why our joints hurt. Just like a chicken, we’re shaped by our environment. When we allow marketing, comfort or ‘normality’ to inform how we shape environments, we’re usually trading that for our health. But when we are intentional and curate our environment to help promote the habits we know that will serve us and our kids well, then energy, clarity and longevity become almost effortless. 10 YEARS OF THE MIDWIFERY UNIT NETWORK! What an important and powerful day we had in London yesterday, celebrating 10 years of the Midwifery Unit Network (MUNet) alongside almost 100 midwives, researchers, leaders and maternity advocates from across the world. There was such a powerful sense of shared purpose in the room - a commitment to ensuring that women and birthing people have access to safe, respectful, evidence-based maternity care, and to protecting and strengthening midwifery-led care and midwifery units. Throughout the day we heard from an extraordinary range of speakers exploring the evidence, impact, politics and power surrounding maternity care. Prof Christine McCourt reflected on the landmark Birthplace research and the challenges of sustainability, Prof Jacqueline Dunkley-Bent OBE discussed ICM’s strategy for scaling midwifery models of care across Europe, and Wendy Olayiwola brought an essential focus to the inequalities that persist within maternity care. The panel discussions brought the evidence firmly into practice, sharing experiences of transforming maternity care across Europe, and demonstrating how evidence can become action through continuous quality improvement, the MUSA Framework and European Midwifery Unit Accreditation (EMUA). Perhaps one of the strongest messages of the day was that improving maternity care requires not only robust evidence, but courage, persistence, collaboration and the determination to turn that evidence into change. Ten years of MUNet represents so much more than an anniversary. It represents a growing international movement working to ensure that midwifery-led care and midwifery units remain a valued, visible and integral part of safe maternity systems. Huge congratulations to Dr Lucia Rocca-Ihenacho and everyone who has contributed to the Midwifery Unit Network over the past decade. What an achievement - and what an exciting foundation for the next ten years. We were also very proud that All4Maternity was there supporting the celebration, alongside colleagues and organisations who share this commitment to improving maternity care.

I freakin love my job. Yes I get to geek out on human biochemistry, yes I get to build a family lifestyle that others can draw from and yes I get walk alongside those families as their lives are transformed with renewed energy, resilience and freedom… But… Perhaps the part I enjoy most is bringing all these like minded people together for our TRIBE events. This culminates each summer in our @sychpwll summer adventure. “The highlight of my year” “Refreshed and ready to go for it” “Exactly the place and the people I needed” Behaviour change needs the right tactical information and bespoke strategies but it also needs real relationships that are moving in the same direction. I’m so incredibly grateful for all of the families I’ve worked with over the years and especially you lot in the TRIBE!
