… Destination Storytellers ❤️ …

We’ve been moving between Diani and Watamu, working on a new story with Hubert Allah-Mensah and the experiences have been nothing short of surreal.

Diani & the Pemba Channel

I boarded a dhow with Nomadic Sails and set out toward the Pemba Channel. Moving across those waters on a traditional vessel makes you realize how much history lives there centuries of trade, culture, food, and human stories.

Watamu & the Musafir

Sailing through Mida Creek aboard the Musafir was a true highlight. The history behind the boat, the setting sun, and the quiet energy of the creek created one of those rare moments where you just put the camera down and take it all in.

That’s the core of what we set out to document: not just what a location looks like, but the rich stories sitting right underneath the surface.

... Chasing Wasini Sunsets 🌅 ...

My storytelling expedition through the East African Coast brought me to Diani. It sits on Kenya’s south coast, about 30 km south of Mombasa.

It’s known for its long stretch of white sand, warm Indian Ocean, coral reefs, and the quieter coastal atmosphere around the beach towns.

Diani has a strong Swahili coastal culture around it, with dhow sailing, seafood, coconut palms, local villages, and places like the Kaya Kinondo sacred forest nearby. And the highlight of my travel was partaking in a traditional dhow sailing experience on the Pemba Channel all the way to Wassini Island.

The traditional dhow is a wooden sailing boat associated with the Swahili coast and the wider Indian Ocean. They have been used for centuries to move people, fish, and goods between coastal communities and islands.

Around Diani, Mombasa, Watamu and Lamu, you’ll still see dhows being used for fishing, transport and tourism. Some are working boats; others have been adapted for sunset cruises and experiences and one of these is @nomadicsails, which is more than a sunset cruise but everything Swahili hospitality could offer. Can’t wait to work on this story.

There’s a different kind of fulfillment that comes from helping build something you’d normally just experience.

@tedxaccragh gave me a front-row seat to that.
From the quiet work behind the scenes to watching everything come alive in the room, I learned that meaningful experiences don’t just happen. People build them.

And maybe that’s why I enjoy being involved in communities so much. I’ve always been drawn to building things — ideas, teams, projects, spaces — and seeing what they become when people care enough to show up.
