Meet the Cast- Karriyma Pekary as Deloris Van Cartier

Eeeep! I’m beyond THRILLED to be back on the Cabrillo stage bringing this dream role to life! Deloris Van Cartier means so much to me. She’s truly a version of myself if I was in the 70’s and didn’t have a filter. Haha I so relate to her feeling of being “too much” or, in many ways, not enough. And her longing for belonging as well as her love for bold expression, teaching, performing arts, and LIFE! It’s been such an honor carrying her with me these past few months.

This cast is truly electric and the bond that Deloris has with the talented “numsemble” is especially palpable. Our diversity of demographics has made this experience even more special as we share and learn from one another. I’m constantly inspired by my fellow storytellers and cannot wait to bring our artistic bond to the stage! This show will unify the audience like you’ve never experienced before and it’s truly an honor to be a part of it! SEE YOU THERE!

This role feels meant to be, lemme tell you why:

-Deloris has felt that she’s “too much” all her life, and so have I. We both discover that’s not the case.
-Her story of fatherlessness leading to seeking acceptance, validation, and love from all the wrong places…is my story as well. Thankfully, we both eventually find it from the RIGHT source.
-Even a couple years ago, I wouldn’t have been able to portray Deloris’ electrically exuberant, expressiveness. But after much healing and self-rediscovery (and with the help of my business @expressions.coaching) I’ve grown A LOT in shamelessly expressing myself!
-She discovers that she’s somewhat of a teacher, a leader, a unifier, and a celebrator of individuality and freedom of expression. I’ve been learning that about myself lately.
-She’s hilaaarious and I’ve been longing to play a comedic role of this caliber.
-She honestly feels like a version of ME, but in the 70’s. 🪩 There’s a bit of a “kindred spirit” feeling as I dive deeper into portraying her character.

The list goes on, but’s that’s all I’ll share for now!
I’m just beyond honored to be the storyteller that gets to bring Deloris Van Cartier to life! And boooy does she have a lot of LIFE in her! Haha Congratulations @cabrillostage on 45 FABULOUS seasons! 🙌🏾 And thank you @lookoutsantacruz for the wonderfully well-written article.
