First family hunt 🥰🦆👫🏻🦮
I’ve come at this hobby very backwards, having not grown up with hunting in my life and spending a year+ training a bird dog before ever firing at a duck. Today, I finally got to see this sweet pup in action as we got our first birds together as a family. Thank you @extra.chrisb for bringing me along on this journey and the fine ladies of @uncharted_outdoorswomen who showed me the ropes on my first hunt just over a year ago. My heart is full and I’m beaming with pride over how well Kirby pup is coming along. Can’t wait to get back out there ❤️

Happiest of birthdays to this two year old pupper! Kirby, you’re the best companion, adventure pal, fishy dog and soon-to-be blind partner 🦆 we could ask for. Love you, buddy ❤️🐾

“Anxious for Autumn”

it is so big
this little seed that
rests in my chest
like chrysanthemum
anxious for autumn

when she flowers
and my God she will
wait at your sill
and gaze on as
golden devotion blooms

I wrote the above half-popped at O’Hare. I was waiting on a flight (beer(s) in hand) to see my dear friends and we were delayed. Then delayed again. Then canceled. JJ, ever-resourceful, immediately booked a new flight via Midway and an Uber zipped us across town because he knew we needed to get there.

Not because it was some kind of emergency. Because friendships like these are sustenance. They are life-giving.

At the time I wasn’t writing about waiting because I was in the midst of an IT crisis, although in retrospect that seems apropos.

I was really writing about waiting on love.

About waiting on these friends who took years to find. And how now, in this season of life, I sit in a cycle of waiting to see them again.

One couple is in Colorado. Another is not even in this country. Finding each other is never easy.

But we are willing to wait, like a late blooming flower, for our season to come. And when it does - damn do we know how to bloom.

Maggie and Jen, Chris and Matty - and all dear friends from afar - you are always worth waiting for.

THE OPEN….starts Thursday Feb 29. What’s cool about the open? Lots of things.
There are close to 13,000 affiliates in the world. The majority of them will run the open in their gym. Last year 323,014 people signed up for the open.
In order to make it to the CrossFit games an athlete has to participate in the open and finish in a top percentage to move onto the next stage of competition. The everyday CrossFit athlete is competing right next to the top level athletes in the sport. We do the same workouts and get ranked with our peers.

CrossFit isn’t just about our little gym on Indian Trail. It’s a worldwide movement. We are part of something much bigger then ourselves. This feels important. It’s a movement built on health and wellness. It’s a movement built on challenging yourself. It’s a movement built on GROWTH; physical and mental.

The open is a cool time to push yourself. To do something different. To step outside of your comfort zone.
