Kunsthal Extra City and the Guillaume Bijl Estate present: In Remembrance of the Earldom of Watou, the first posthumous exhibition of Guillaume Bijl (1946–2025). The work was previously shown only once, during Poëziezomer Watou in 2002.

Twenty-four years later, this unique work is being reconstructed for the first time in the former Dominican church of Kunsthal Extra City. The installation brings together a fictional-historical museum, a banquet hall, and The Early Years of the Earldom of Watou, the only theatre piece in Bijl’s oeuvre. As in the original presentation in Watou, a festive procession will also form part of the exhibition opening.

The theatre piece will be performed live twice during the opening today, at 15:00 and 17:00. Each performance lasts approximately 20 minutes.

Would you like to attend? Both performances are free, but advance booking is required @extra_city.

Can’t make it to the opening? The exhibition runs until December 27 and can be visited on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Time to bring back an iconic piece of Belgian art history 🎭

You might know him from his surreal installations, but did you know 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝘂𝗺𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗷𝗹 created a theater piece that was only performed once? @extra_city is bringing 𝘍𝘦𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘫𝘬𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘷𝘢𝘯 𝘩𝘦𝘵 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘢𝘧𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘱 𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘶 back to life for the first posthumous solo exhibition on Bijl.

Enter a fictional museum, stroll through the banquet hall right onto the stage for a total immersive experience. All of that is topped of with a festive march in the streets, just like they did in 2002! With contributions by @studiopietervermeersch, @alinebouvy, @stephaneschraenen, Hantrax and many more.

In search of light

Five-hour performance in which two performers moved across a platform at the centre of a church, under overhead light, guided by more than seventy score cards for solo, duet and group actions. Each visitor received a guide to the performance. They could ask the conductor for a card and step onto the stage, following it closely, loosely, or simply staying still.

Performed on 19 September 2026 at The Image Generator in Antwerp. A performance festival by @platform0090, @c.takt, @extra_city and @soap_maastricht
