When I began my yoga practice, I never dreamed of teaching. I couldn’t even imagine having the relationship with my body that was necessary to practice yoga — I was in near-constant physical pain, couldn’t sleep, and felt like my body was always working against me. Yoga, at first, was a salve- a slow drip of medicine that took the edge off without allowing me to abandon myself (what a gift🫶🏼).

Over time, and for reasons I couldn’t explain, I started sleeping better. I felt the same physical pain, but was less burdened by it. The struggles with my health were still profound, but I felt less defined by them. Somewhere between my legs falling asleep in a pose I couldn’t name, the busy-ness of my mind wondering if I was doing it right and simultaneously wondering what I was going to make for dinner, and - oh yeah, breathing! — what felt like absolute chaos was transforming me.

Yoga set me free.

Not from my pain, or grief, or the struggle of my human-ness — but from suffering. Yoga didn’t take my pain away, but it completely changed my relationship to it. It allowed me to loosen my attachment to the identity I had wrapped around my suffering, step back from the acute focus of discomfort every second of the day, and realize - there were so many things I couldn’t control or change, but suffering wasn’t one of them. It was a choice I was unknowingly making, and it consumed me.

Many great teachers have called the body our vehicle to spiritual awakening - the widest gateway to experience freedom from the mind stuff. We may think of the fancy poses or the beautiful way someone flows with their breath, but the real gateway to freedom is wherever our pain resides - it’s always in the cracks where the light gets in✨

To be human is to hurt, to grieve, to lose, and to struggle. But what if we could experience all of that without suffering? As a gift instead of a burden?

What if we considered every one of those a doorway to our own liberation?
