Trinidad J’ouvert is the traditional, pre-dawn street party marking the official start of Trinidad and Tobago Carnival on Monday morning. Rooted in French Afro-Creole Canboulay traditions, it features revelers dancing through the streets covered in mud, paint, and oil, accompanied by soca music and steelpans.

Key aspects of the Trinidad J’ouvert experience include:
* Starts in the early morning (around 2-4 AM), before sunrise, and peaks by mid-morning on Carnival Monday.
* Historically, it signifies “daybreak” (from French jour ouvert) and celebrates the freedom and heritage of the Caribbean diaspora.
* “Duttiness” and Costumes: Participants often join bands that provide paint, mud, oil, and, in modern, all-inclusive experiences, costumes/t-shirts.
* Music and Vibe: Soca bands, DJs, and live music trucks lead the parade, creating a high-energy atmosphere.
The celebration is a vital part of the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival, which includes the vibrant J’ouvert street party in Port of Spain.
