This week’s staff pick, “The Living Present,” spotlights Matt Hunter (@mattyhunter) and his impact on the freeriding scene and mountain biking as a whole. Hunter made a name for himself in the early 2000s, with monumental gaps and step-downs in some of the decade's most influential freeride films such as “Roam” and “Seasons,” becoming synonymous with the freeride landscape of Kamloops, B.C. While these hits have become icons of an era, Hunter’s personality and inclusivity stand out the most, with an admirable ability to blend into any riding group, regardless of skill level.

“He’s a true original,” says none other than the Godfather of Freeride, Wade Simmons (@wadevsimmons). “He’s a freerider’s freerider. When I look at his lines, I’m like, ‘Wow, that’s creative. That’s something I really wanna ride.’ And when you do something that’s never been done before, it’s a seismic shift that can change the perspective of an entire generation of riders.”

The story behind Matt Hunter’s Gap to Wall in Kamloops.

For us at Anthill Films @anthillfilms , this was a defining moment in Follow Me, our first film as Anthill. We knew Matt well from The Collective years and had always loved his creativity.

For Sterling @eyeroam and Matty @mattyhunter , landing the cover of Bike Magazine @bikemag was a huge honour for both photographer and athlete. For it to become a gatefold cover made it even more special.

“In the evolution of freeride during that decade or so… Matt was one of the key riders whom was pioneering the boundaries not only in magnitude but also creativity. I loved that he tried to interpret into the raw landscape offered and he was willing to put in the time to find what was naturally being offered. He had a great gauge on where the sport had been, and what hadn’t been done before… and he was willing to risk being at the front of exploration”

@andrewshandro reflects on an early 2000 trip to Utah for Ride to the Hills, including the story behind the iconic AK Mullet Line, first filmed in 2000.

The AK Mullet Line is considered an early MTB multi feature freeride line in a feature film. It was in the cult classic Ride to the Hills.
