The Leadville Trail 100 is an incredible test of human perseverance. Running 100 miles is difficult enough, but doing it all above 10,000 feet significantly increases that difficulty factor. Now imagine do that without the use of your limbs or blindfolded. That would be beyond-difficulty factor!

That is exactly what Brian Reynold @brianreynoldsrunner and Kyle Coon @eyeronkyle did this past weekend in Leadville, CO. Brian is a double amputee who depends on multiple prosthetics or blades to run. Although he has run under 17 minutes for a 5K (16:49, to be precise), technical terrain and big climbs and descents makes it very challenging for him to negotiate, displayed by his previous three LT100 attempts and failures to reach the finish line. This was his fourth attempt and he was determined to reach that line, hell or high water. And he did just that, finishing what he had started many years before, by crossing the finish line in 28 hour 55 minutes 43 seconds! The first double amputee to do so at Leadville 100.

Kyle Coon has been completely blind since he was seven years old, due to cancer, but that hasn’t stopped him from achieving his goals! He is a 2 X Paralympian and motivational speaker and took on the challenge of LT100 after competing in triathlon and shorter trail races.

He used several guides during the race and multiple at one time when the terrain was very technical. All was going well until he had a tough time getting down the steep, rocky, and technical backside of Hope Pass, missing the cutoff time at the halfway point by a few minutes. But that won’t stop Kyle, as he has already committed to coming back to Leadville to, “finish this baby off!”

The ability to accomplish great feats comes from strong determination and strict perseverance. There were also several other adaptive athletes racing Leadville 100. Congratulations to them for merely dreaming big enough to take on 100 miles.

Learning to fly without wings! 🪽
